The UFC uploaded Sean O’Malley’s KO of Aljamain Sterling last month at UFC 292. The footage differs from the UFC usual position of protecting its IP content from pirates and fans not willing to pay the PPV money.
Yet, in an effort to push O’Malley as one of its next top headlining stars, its provided the fight with the ending. This past summer UFC sponsor Timex, launched an ad campaign featuring O’Malley with its branding featured on the Octagon mats at some of the company’s events.
The UFC has and still is one of the most aggressive sports brands in protecting its IP. Recently, it provided comments to the USPTO in looking at ways in which the government could police and protect the intellectual property of rights holders. As we know, its gone out of its way to go after pirates and those that put up illegal PPV streams that hurt the company’s bottom line.
But, the video shows that the UFC has a plan for O’Malley and its willing to bend its rules to get fans (and potential sponsors and stakeholders) behind the new 135lb champion.
.@UFC confirms that it made the rare exception of quickly sharing a PPV main-event knockout highlight on social media at #UFC292 last month because it and @ESPN agreed on the importance of showcasing @SugaSeanMMA's rising star power. https://t.co/YS6ilU0RqX
