Pac-May II set for September

11 years after their first matchup in May 2015, Manny Pacquiao will fight Floyd Mayweather, Jr. at the Sphere in Las Vegas on Saturday, September 19th. Netflix will be the broadcast partner for the event.

Mayweather announced that he would be returning to professional fighting after this spring’s exhibition in the Congo. Pacquiao will fight Ruslan Provodnikov in an exhibition in April in Las Vegas.

The two fought in a long anticipated matchup in the spring of 2015. Most boxing fans thought that the fight was too late at that point in their respective careers. Mayweather, Jr. won a unanimous decision over Pacquiao. There was some controversy as Pacquiao stated that he had a shoulder injury going into the fight but it was not disclosed to the commission or Mayweather. The news led to a class action lawsuit.

The 47-year-old Pacquiao has a professional record of 62-8-3. The 49-year-old Mayweather has a 50-0 professional record with his last professional win coming against Conor McGregor. Mayweather has fought several exhibitions and one might deduce he is in need of money. A newly filed lawsuit against Showtime and Stephen Espinoza claiming they were a part of a scheme to defraud him of over $340 million of purse money as well as reports that he has defaulted on investments lead one to believe he is need of a cash infusion.

Payout Perspective:

Based on the location of the fight, they will spare no expense at putting together what is likely the biggest fight of 2026. Despite their advanced age (and likely) diminished skills, this will be a fight that boxing fans will watch and the casual viewer will clamor to see. Whether its a commentary on the current state of boxing or the belief that star power drives the sport, this is will be a spectacle more than sport.
