Can UFC 188 break the June swoon for PPVs?

June 13, 2015 by Jason Cruz 33 Comments

With UFC 188 set for Saturday, we shall see whether the event featuring Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum improve upon June’s usual dismal PPV buy rates.

Based on the info compiled by MMA Payout:

2011 UFC 131, Vancouver, BC – Dos Santos vs. Carwin – 330,000

2012 UFC 147, Belo Horizonte, Brazil – W. Silva vs. Franklin – 140,000

2013 UFC 161, Winnipeg, Manitoba – Evans vs. Henderson – 140,000

2014 UFC 174, Vancouver, BC – Johnson vs. Bagautinov – 115,000

This year’s June event takes place from Mexico City, Mexico.  The card is stacked with Mexican and/or Mexican American fighters.

One would think that the return of Cain Velasquez as he takes on the interim Heavyweight Champion Fabricio Werdum would draw more than the 181,000 average for June PPV buys the past 4 years.  Moreover, Gilbert Melendez versus Eddie Alvarez is a real strong co-main event.  Yet, there seems to be a lack of buzz for the event.  Notably, despite a sellout in Mexico City last October, the PPV buy rate drew just 185,000.

Payout Perspective:

The last time a June PPV surpassed 500K buys was Chuck Liddell’s last UFC fight against Rich Franklin in 2010.  UFC 115 drew 525,000 PPV buys.  With the big July card up next, June’s PPVs seem to be overlooked.  This time, June’s PPV offers some big fights.  The question is whether fight fans will tune in to pay for it.

Its so funny how morons say the “UFC doesn’t release ppv number” when in fact they control all the so called leaks and figures. Of course 187 shit the bed! The UFC just cant deal with the real truth, whats the big deal???

Great main event tonight between Cain and Werdum.

Over 20k ppl in the arena looked and sounded great on TV.

Dana did not announce the UFC 188 PPV buyrate, though. That’s typically not a good sign.

Sal is also a mutant. Dave Meltzer and Dana White are not friends by any means. White has been very critical of him. Meltzer gets his numbers from his cable contacts, not White. You are such an moron.

Joe, Dana White has literally never announced the ppv buyrate, and even the numbers he leaks to Iole, are never released the night of the event.

With that being said, I doubt this did a big number. Werdum isn’t a big draw, it was in Mexico and they promoted it very poorly. They are more focused on McGregor-Aldo.

On a marketing point of view…ufc spent a lot on cain to be able to get the mexican market but injuries held it back and now in mexico he gets beat…roi is really bad on cain

    d,

you’re right about Dana not typically announcing the PPVs.

I blame the media for not asking the question. During the UFC 182 post fight, for example, they asked and he said it did more than 750k

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55MWWfPfZN8 (7:40)

With that said, I agree that I don’t think this event did great. Cain hasn’t been able to break 400k PPV buys recently and the undercard didn’t have any kind of buzz.

Hey Dumass D who do you think Melzer’s source is??? Gee I wonder why they only release numbers to him that coincide with the UFC”s agenda?? YOU ARE A COMPLETE IDIOT ITS LAUGHABLE! UFC controls all its numbers I know its hard for a stupid person like your self to understand or even see that.

Joe, he still didn’t give an exact figure and that was probably the only time he ever even gave any type of estimation about ppv numbers the night of the event.

Meltzer has direct contacts with ppv contacts. His numbers nearly always used to conflict with Iole’s numbers- the actual person who White & Co. would leak numbers to. You are a retarded, brain dead mutant, who desperately needs medication.

Funny how Dave doesn’t get numbers timely when the PPV sucks ass, but when its decent he gets them right in time to cover up other UFC bad news. It predictable, laughable and pathetic.

Salda I do find that questionable- anytime the #s are good they are released immediately. If they’re not- usually an indicator they suck balls.

Oh well too bad for delusional he was hoping 187 was going to be enormous. Guess not! He needs to pray 189 can save his ass or off to Yahoo he goes permanently!

Leon still shamelessly attempting to save face. I never said 187 was going to be enormous after Jones was removed for a non injury related issue. I said it would do 700k buys. That isn’t enormous. Although it was off, I am no where near as wrong as you’ve been all year with all of your predictions up until 187 being dead wrong because you are a fucking idiot. What are you going to do when you have to change your name? Are you just not going to post anymore? You are just digging your ditch deeper. You need so many fights getting scrapped at this point. They are around 3m buys at this point. You and I both know you are fucked.

Delusional I post for free, you get 3 cents a word so get off the fake high horse. We all know you get paid to spin UFC propaganda it’s weak you still use that approach. Lots of companies hire bogus copywriters such as yourself to spin google searches and add content to websites.

If you want 4 cents a word let me know I’ll get you a good copywriting job when you lose the bet.

Leon, you post because you are a faggot who probably works for a boxing website. You get paid in welfare like Saldaqueer and you hate the fact that I proved your dumbass wrong on our bet which is why you will have to change your name and eat crow worse than anyone one here. What’s funny is how confidently wrong you were you dumb shit. How’s it feel to get embarrassed like this, idiot?

What’s funny is you are shamelessly still going down this road, even though it is obvious you are going to lose the bet. We are at roughly 3 million with the biggest fight this year coming up. You better pray for an injury because if that fight goes down, that will be your final nail in the coffin.

    Eat shit homo. HAHAHA!!
