UFC 190 draws 900,000 PPV buys

August 27, 2015

Dave Meltzer writing for MMA Fighting reports that UFC 190 featuring Ronda Rousey and Beth Correia drew an estimated 900,000 PPV buys.  The number would make it the third PPV event this year to draw 800,000 buys.

UFC 189 featuring Conor McGregor vs. Chad Mendes drew 1 million buys according to UFC.com.  Other estimates have the July 11 PPV less than 1 million.  Regardless, it’s the second straight PPV that has done well based on just 1 fighter.  UFC 189 it was all Conor McGregor and UFC 190 was all Ronda Rousey.

Perhaps supporting the contention that Ronda Rousey’s star is brighter than ever is that there were no noteworthy fights on the UFC 190 main card.  Despite the fact the show went over 3 hours, there was nothing great on the card besides Rousey.  There were two TUF Brazil final fights and Shogun Rua-Little Nog.  In comparison, UFC 189 did have another title fight between Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler to entice fans to buy the PPV.

UFC 190 joins 189 and 182 as top events that have drawn 800,000 PPV buys or more.  No PPV event went over 600,000 in 2014.  In 2013, only 2 events (UFC 158 and UFC 168) went over 800,000 PPV buys.

Ronda Rousey PPVs (via MMA Payout Bluebook)

UFC 157 – vs. Liz Carmouche: 450,000

UFC 168 – vs. Miesha Tate (co-main): 1,025,000

UFC 170 – vs. Sara McMann: 350,000

UFC 175 – vs. Alexis Davis (co-main): 545,000

UFC 184 – vs. Cat Zingano: 600,000

UFC 190 – vs. Beth Correia: 900,000

Payout Perspective:

Early indicators from most outlets reflected the fact that UFC 190 did well on PPV.  The prelims drew 1.3M viewers and google searches topped 6 million.  All of these indicators would point to the fact that Ronda Rousey is, arguably, the top draw in the UFC.  The card had little to support her and she was able to garner 900,000 fans.  The PPV buy rate also reflects the fact that her star is gaining steam.  One might expect her to draw similar numbers when she faces Holly Holm at UFC 195.

the UFC is on a roll this year with PPV buys. Surprised there aren’t any anti UFC haters posting yet …..cough cough tops and Sal little girls.

  2. BrainSmasher on August 27th, 2015 2:15 PM

She didn’t really get press until after this fight. So I expect her actually poparoty to be bigger than this. if these numbers are correct then I expect her next fight to do 1.2 million to 1.6 million.

  3. JF on August 27th, 2015 4:15 PM

VERY impressive. The card was shit, her opponent was irrelevant, Good for her, Judo rules!

  4. Chris on August 27th, 2015 5:47 PM

Great news, Ronda becoming the biggest mainstream star.

Holm fight wont have the beef and bad blood like Bethe fight but they will promote it as Ronda vs one of the best female boxers ever, unbeaten, best striker she’s fought.

    Expect it to do well.

  5. FightBusiness on August 27th, 2015 7:00 PM

this is such a bizarre and impressive number. 900k ppv buys for what? watching her beat some lady no one knows? her previous ppv’s ranged from disasters to above average because they featured weidman. ufc 187 with the heavyweight title on the line and chris weidman a dominant champion also featured did 375 k ppv’s. my instinct says she will have big numbers in the future but certainly none like this unless she fights cyborg or that other hot chick from strike force. i guess the fact this lady made fun of her dad who committed suicide might have something to do with it.

UFC recapturing the magic of 2008 – 2010

  7. Chris on August 27th, 2015 7:46 PM

    She did
    450k vs Liz
1 mill vs Tate co main event under Silva
    350k vs McMann
550k vs Nunes co main under Weidman
    600k vs Cat
    900k vs Bethe

She’s bigger now than ever before.

Numbers keep going up, she’s now a superstar, huge stars talking about her fights, its an event when she fights.

Holm, Cyborg, Tate fights are all big PPv that could all do over a mill.

UFC having a great year, managed to build Ronda and McGregor into superstars this year, a year with no GSP and lost Silva adn Jones in first two months.

    They really needed that.

Now I just hope they can sign Fedor and Jones and Silva return next year, Sonnen comes back, doubt GSP returns but imagine if he came back, plus UFC 200. Could be an all time year for UFC.

  8. Chris on August 27th, 2015 7:47 PM

oops my bad, meant vs Davis she did 550k under Weidman/Machida

  9. d on August 27th, 2015 8:40 PM

This just proves that this is the biggest year in UFC history. They hit it out of the park. MMA taking over.

This fight actually did better than 900k buys. Meltzer even pointed out, his numbers don’t include people who bought the ppv online and streamed it which is becoming more conventional now than ever.

Man I’m good at predicting this stuff. Where’s Leon?

  10. The Greatest on August 27th, 2015 11:56 PM

MMA taking over yet cant get a ppv over 1mil., dumbass.

If I were a MMA diehard I would be upset that Rousey is my biggest star.
It makes your sport look like shit.

Just imagine if Lisa Leslie was the biggest name in basketball. I mean how as a man can you even talk shit when a woman is your dominant athlete.

Biggest name in baseball/softball is a woman….that would be ridiculous.

  11. The Greatest on August 27th, 2015 11:57 PM

I think Mayweather should go into the UFC, fight Rousey, and just pin her down with one hand as he puts an apron on her with another hand.
    HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA

    4.4MIL

Some of its hype and most of it is because shes a woman rolling around.
I got an uncle who went to one of her PPVs in Vegas. The one where Silva broke his leg. He went because he likes Rousey.
He doesn’t watch any other UFC ppvs but likes seeing what shes doing.
Its because they grab and roll around. Its the “cat fight” vibe.
Boxing women don’t get that because they wear longer shorts and just beat the shit out of each other.
There are some cute boxers but you get boxers like Ann Wolfe who are just absolutely destructive and would bury Ronda.
Holly Holm, who was a shit boxer who fought in NM her whole life, is someone who can get a following. Shes blonde, shes better looking than Ronda. Who knows.
But in the UFC, the girls are rolling around, there asses and tits are pressed in compression shorts and tops. Its just more visually pleasing.

Have them wear pant suits and no one would ever watch again.
Shit ppl only watch Rousey, no one gives a shit about any of the other ones.

  13. mmaguru on August 28th, 2015 4:08 AM

With another big event yet to come, this is a banner year for the UFC and a turn around from the last year. When you consider that both McGregor and Rousey are still young fighters, there is a lot of upside to take away from this. UFC 200 is looking to be huge if the stars continue to align for the promotion. Having the possibility of McGregor and Rousey on the same card points towards a record event (assuming that is the UFCs plan).

  14. d on August 28th, 2015 5:27 AM

The Gayest is in full self destruct mode. He sees the writing on the wall that boxing is headed for a major decline and MMA is exploding right now. He hates that the biggest name in boxing is gay and would lose to a woman in a real fight. Rousey would whoop Gayweather’s ass if they actually really fought. Truly embarrassing.

MMA Killing it again, boxing looks pitiful. Boxing’s just old stars, old fighters. P55, senior citizen crowd.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  15. SoWhat on August 28th, 2015 6:13 AM

Mediocre fighters fighting against other fighters who are just a bit above mediocre. How underwhelming. The only reason they got 900k is because of the hype and sponsorship deals. And let’s not forget the UFC fanatics who will buy anything the UFC sells.

Take away all of that and you’re left with some underwhelming fights that no one would watch even if they were for free. I like Ronda but at the end of the day she’s still human and not the killing machine people think she is. She’s a human being that breathes air and drinks water like the rest of us. And there are many other fighters out there, better than she will ever be. So let’s stop pretending she’s Wonder Woman.

Anyway, the hype is becoming less and less effective. 900k after all the hyped-up promotion is a pretty small figure if you ask me.

  16. d on August 28th, 2015 7:07 AM

This must be really painful for the boxing trolls to realize the UFC is going to do 6 ppvs this year that will go over 600k buys and 4 that will go over 800k. They are also going to eclipse boxing in ppv buys and revenue again for the 8th out of the past 9 years. That doesn’t even include that they have a legit network deal, their tv ratings are better on both cable and network, all while keeping their overhead costs at a fraction of what the boxing promotions have.

  17. Fight Fan on August 28th, 2015 8:24 AM

D how about that 500 million dollar loan?

  18. d on August 28th, 2015 8:46 AM

How about it? They are probably going to make about 250m this year alone in profit and have evolving and expanding revenue streams.

How is PBC going to recoup their 500m losses?

Your local Buffalo Wild Wings won’t be able to cover those costs.

  19. saldathief on August 28th, 2015 8:53 AM

bahahah it must really suck to be a ufc fan and have to defend and brag about the direction this sport is going its a disgrace!! Dana is such a moron and it must be killing him to kiss some dike twats ass!! Next trans gender fights @ ufc everyone is laughing except the joy stick nation of D and other like her!

  20. Fight Fan on August 28th, 2015 9:15 AM

D meanwhile Floyd makes that in one fight lol. Boxing has multiple broadcasters and networks. Ufc is all alone and sinking pal, nobody wears the mma clothes anymore and even my buffalo wild wings stopped showing them. The only thing about boxing u talk about is pbc, never showtime or HBO who have been in the game for decades. Don’t try to act like you can see everyone’s financial books.

  21. BrainSmasher on August 28th, 2015 10:20 AM

Good point Guru! Not only are they just starting their runs (most of the big draws in the past only got their at the end of their runs). But if and when they lose they will pass a lot of credibility and fame to who ever beats them if it’s the right person. To have two huge stars at the same time is huge for the UFC. Just imagine the idiots who are trying to jump ship.

  22. BrainSmasher on August 28th, 2015 10:43 AM

If the ufc blows up like is very possible, and does so with their current access they have to network TV. It could be a game changer. If this happens fighters sponsors in the UFC will sky rocket. The value of sponsor Reebok has now will sky rocket for when the contract ends. Like I said it is very short sighted for anyone to leave the UFC unless the money gap is huge and you don’t have much time left in the sport.

If the Reebok deal jumps at the same rate it did for the NFL. Fighters would get between 40,000-400,000 per fight from the sponsor alone. Add to that increased fight pay and personal sponsors. Fighters would be where other athletes are finally!

  23. Matt Farmer on August 28th, 2015 12:46 PM

People are shocked about this number, and everyone is giving Ronda praise for the number it drew. And Ronda deserves tons of credit….BUT one thing fight people often forget is that you need an oppnent to make money. The opponent does not have to be the best, like in Bethe’s case. But Bethe deserves a TON of credit for being smart enough to build herself up.

Another thing fight people often dismiss. Being a professional prize fighter also means building interest in the fight. You are your own promoter and need to promote the fight nearly as much as train for the fight. And regardless of your personal feelings towards Bethe, she did an excellent job of promoting the fight. She likely made life changing money from that fight.

    Kudos to both women.

  24. d on August 28th, 2015 1:40 PM

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Fag Fan is delusional. Maybe he is eating too much jizz at his local Buffalo Wild Wings.

In no way, shape or form is Gayweather making even remotely close to 250m in a year. He may have made 100m in that fight. That’s it. Dont’ get irrational and start to believe the delusional figures these retards throw out there.

Boxing is a shitting joke has multiple broadcasts that are going down the toilet. All of their ppv stars are about to retire other than Canelo who is an overrated fraud that hasn’t ever carried a big ppv by himself. PBC is flushing 500m down the toilet. The ratings for boxing across the board are horrible. They had 1 big fight this year and that’s it. Don’t compare the two, MMA is killing it this year. They have washed up idiots like Ortiz, Shamrock destroying anything boxing has to offer on cable. Showtime and HBO don’t draw great ratings and they are the best boxing has to offer. Go look at their numbers retard. They aren’t great at all.

  25. tops E on August 28th, 2015 3:38 PM

I thought 189 a million ppv…and 190 was bigger? so highest spent on 189 and got lower? Is it 850 or a mil? From meltzer estimate….rousey should just promote herself and get more money hahahaha….ufc spent a fortune but got a lower ppv number on 189 the brand is not that strong….ufc needs rousey for her 14 year old girl fans and theyre mom…hahaha

If rousey and holy holm just fought in boxing…they would get paid higher because of the ali act….hahaha…common sense

i think rousey is very nice and a wonderful fighter but MMA is killing it?? really. ufc 187 had two championship belts on the line and did 375k buys. that says it all. they’re killing it but cant clear 1.2 million ppv buys desite huge marketing efforts. whats going on is the ufc has a low ceiling (1 million buys) however the bottom tier fights are doing better, rather than 400k 600k. it seems the ufc is putting on better consistant fights but their ceiling will once and for all be seen for mcgregor vs aldo. Boxing’s is 6 million for one event. if two great heavyweights ever got it on which we likely will never see. tyson vs spinks does that in todays era. its down to the wire boys. both sports are approaching similar years and no clear winner. also remember pac isnt fighting a second time this year. no mma hasnt won this year mma trolls. stop lying and popping the cork. its down to the wire. boxing can very well take it.

And suddenly a new challenger to the king of the retards arrives.

Anyone who even follows the sport remotely knows that fight had very little hype and was an afterthought following 189. Most people expected it to do less than half of 900k considering there was a horrible undercard, a no named opponent, and it was in Brazil. You guys are idiots.

  29. d on August 28th, 2015 9:06 PM

Fagbusiness once again spouting out more of his delusions and nonsense. He takes one event that under-performed while ignoring all the other events that did great this year. He didn’t even think the UFC would get 5m buys this year- so much so that he bet me a name change that it wouldn’t. Not only are they going to hit 5m- but they are going to hit 7m most likely.

Also, the UFC’s ceiling is much higher than1m- it was already 1.6m and it is going to be higher after UFC 194 and then UFC 200. Boxing’s ceiling was Mayweather- Pacqauio which destroyed everything that boxing ever did and still only did in the 3m range most likely. This 6m figure that you just threw out there proves you are growing more delusional as the days go by. Boxing’s new ceiling is going to be much lower also when Mayweather retires in a month.

Lastly, mma destroyed boxing this year in ppv, tv, the ESPYs, Hollywood, etc. Everywhere. They whooped that ass. Get ready for your new nickname coming up next month when the Mighty Mouse numbers are finally released Fagbusiness.

  30. d on August 28th, 2015 9:10 PM

By the way, with Rousey-Holm announced for November now, are you finally going to admit it is a done deal for the UFC over boxing in terms of ppv this year fagbusiness? They could hit 8m buys this year.

  31. FightBusiness on August 28th, 2015 10:26 PM

did this clown just say ufc’s ceiling is 1.6 million? bitch they havent done that in years and they simply did it when they were new and had a stacked card with brock lesnar. the white supremicist looking audience went wild. but those days are done since the ufc is more gentrified. silva, gsp, jones couldnt even come close to that number and they were more dominant. velasquez knocked his ass out and cant clear 400k ppv buys. ufc beat boxing in the espy’s?? who gives a fuck what a channel that honors a drag queen thinks. BAHAHAH. did you tear up when bruce accepted that award? floyd mayweather won that award so many times he’s tired. ufc won in hollywood?? bitch what are you talking about. did you see the lead up to mayweather vs pac (facepalm) by the way since when his hollywood a gauge of combat sports and by the way two more boxing movies are set to opn up in hollywood.

  32. d on August 28th, 2015 10:36 PM

Fagbusiness, maybe you should investigate what a ceiling is you retarded idiot.

Also, they did that number in 2009, 16 years after the UFC was started. This wasn’t anything new.

You are just a racist idiot who doesn’t know shit about anything. Your theories about the fighters/audience ethnicity is beyond retarded. Silva was a huge draw and was hardly white.

Drag queens/trannies…….sounds more like boxing seeing how they have trannies as promoters.

By the way, “Southpaw” really killed it in the box office. HAHAHA!!! Box office…POISON!!

UFC could hit 8m buys this year. Fucking destruction of boxing. Hahaha.

Literally everything you claim is a lie. You have to realize somewhere in that conflicting and delusional brain of yours that you are completely full of shit. 500m-hahahaha. Yeah. Show me how the figures go any higher than 300-350m range for that fight.

  36. d on August 29th, 2015 8:21 AM
