Judge grants Penn’s mother 1 year restraining order

August 20, 2025 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

The Hawaii News Now reports that a judge has granted BJ Penn’s mother a restraining order for 1 year. Penn’s mother, 79-year-old Lorraine Shin requested 2 years but the Hilo court granted one year to end May 2026.

Shin requested a temporary protective order back in May after Penn made claims that his family, including Shin, had been replaced by imposters. She claimed “extreme psychological abuse.”

Penn is not allowed 100 feet within of his mother or 100 feet of where his mother resides or works. He cannot contact her via phone or electronically.

Penn has been undergoing mental issues including the claim that his mother has killed his real mother and Shin is actually an imposter.

A violation of the court order may result in jail time of up to year and a fine of up to $1,000.

Payout Perspective:

Its unfortunate that Penn is in such a mental state but it is better that this order is in place than he harm anyone, including himself. It’s clear that Penn is suffering some sort of mental trauma and should receive some professional help. However, it does not seem like that is coming any time soon. It’s sad to see that one of the best UFC fighters of the early Zuffa era is in bad shape.
