On Friday, the UFC announced a new venture, UFC Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The first event will take place on Wednesday of International Fight week and will broadcast on UFC Fight Pass.
The new venture will include shoulder programming starting on Monday June 16th. An 8 episode series, UFC Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Road to the Title will air on UFC’s YouTube channel.
UFC Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: Road to the Title will feature lightweight and welterweight teams coached by Mikey Musumeci and Rerisson Gabriel. The format will be a tournament style bracket to determine finalists in both weight classes to crown inaugural lightweight and welterweight champions.
Payout Perspective:
Does the premise sound familiar? This has all the makings of another The Ultimate Fighter to launch a UFC-branded BJJ league. Certainly, the UFC hopes that it will take off like UFC did. The formula of not paying a lot for talent in an effort to maximize its profits is the UFC model to success. This new venture also should help with UFC Fight Pass subscriptions and cracks into the hardcore BJJ fan market.
