Dustin Poirier gets a Bud Light deal?

March 27, 2024 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

It appears that Dustin Poirier has a deal with UFC sponsor Bud Light. In a social media post on X, Bud Light sent out a post featuring Poirier who defeated Benoit Saint Denis at UFC 299.

Bud Light replaced Modelo as the official beer of the UFC this past year. The deal worked for both partners as Bud Light wanted to appeal to the UFC fan base while the fight promotion received a hefty payday and had the opportunity to promote the UFC brand globally.

Bud Light was ostracized by many conservatives for sponsoring a transgender social media star last year. Although not a direct correlation, the company saw a slump in beer sales in 2023 according to a WSJ article. The right-leaning UFC did not seem like a great fit for Bud-Light. However, the two forged a deal despite the perceived bad public relations. The UFC believed that the Bud Light deal will help it promote the brand globally and compete in sponsorship dollars with other sports leagues.

Poirier, who has a deal for his own hot sauce with the UFC, is a popular fighter for the company and his win as an underdog at UFC 299 solidified his reputation as one of the best in the promotion.

Interesting - in the early 2000s, HBO had to defend "de facto" promoter allegations in front of Congress. If DAZN uses licensed promoters to organize the fights, it's hard to call them a "promoter." SRL signed deals with ABC and HBO without having a promoter, so it's been done.
