Chris Mannix reported that Tyson Fury suffered a cut in training and as a result his fight with Oleksandr Usyk is off. Usyk’s manager told Mannix that his fighter’s February 17th fight with Fury is off although he is hoping to have him fight on that date.
Fury issued a statement:
The statement included a Fury quote which stated, “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition. I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event and I will work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed. I can only apologise to everyone affected including my own team, Team Usyk, the undercard fighters, partners, and fans as well as our hosts and my friends in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.”
Payout Perspective:
The news is disappointing considering the big lead-up for this fight to determine the undisputed heavyweight champion. It’s not known if the event will continue with a replacement to fight Usyk but at this late date its hard to see that occurring. For Fury, this has not been a great several months. In October, he won a narrow decision against Francis Ngannou and now he is out of his fight with Usyk.
