Backstage altercation halts UFC news conference

September 8, 2022 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Thursday’s UFC 279 new conference was canceled at the MGM Grand Garden Arena due to altercations between multiple fighters backstage.  The initial altercation was between Khamzat Chimaev and Kevin Holland.

The Thursday news conference is meant to build up the fight on Saturday one last time prior to fans purchasing the PPV.  Not much news comes out of the presser aside for trash talk between combatants.  But in this case, it was newsworthy.

Multiple reports on twitter cite Holland and Chimaev as the ones that began the backstage issue with Diaz and his group joining in later.

White attempted to modify the news conference but with everyone wanting to know about the backstage altercation, White canceled the rest of it after Kevin Holland and Daniel Rodriguez.

Payout Perspective:

If there is footage, social media and UFC fans will eat it up. Will this sell the fight? Yes.  But I think this event is going to do well regardless due to the Nate Diaz factor and the up and coming Chimaev.  But any extracurricular activities usually peaks the interests of fans.
