Former UFC Champ Velasquez charged with attempted murder

March 1, 2022 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Former UFC Heavyweight Champion was arrested on Monday and charged with attempted murder in Santa Clara, California.  The San Jose Police Department made the announcement on Tuesday morning.

4/ Cain Velasquez was the suspect arrested yesterday in connection with this incident. He was booked into Santa Clara County main jail for attempted murder.

The motive and circumstances surrounding this incident are still under investigation at this time. pic.twitter.com/bBuuPQytNx

The first reports of this incident indicated that the individual, a male, was shot but did not have life-threatening injuries.

The 39-year-old last fought in the UFC in February 2019.  Since then, he has tried out pro wrestling in Mexico and had a brief stint with WWE.  Notably, he lost a pro wrestling match to Brock Lesnar, the man he defeated for the UFC Heavyweight title back in 2010.

Payout Perspective:

I withhold my opinion on this until more information comes out. It could have been a road rage incident or Velasquez and the individual may have known each other. But, this would seem to be an unfortunate occurrence if the former UFC champ were to be guilty of this crime.

Dana White and the UFC are struggling to sell out UFC 328 despite a stacked card, with ticket prices starting around $350 likely playing a role.

That said, it’s not just the UFC—even MVP events with $70 tickets have had trouble filling arenas, suggesting a broader trend.
