DAZN offers Canelo on PPV

December 16, 2020 by Jason Cruz 1 Comment

As its crown jewel returns to its platform on Saturday, DAZN is offering boxing fans the opportunity to purchase Canelo Alvarez on PPV despite the subscription-based digital platform.

It is offering the PPV for $69.99 with InDemand cable subscribers.  The buyers will receive a code for a four-month subscription to DAZN in its purchase of the Canelo-Callum Smith fight on Saturday.

InDemand is in 55 million homes nationwide.  Normally, DAZN offers its fights on a subscription-basis only with month-to-month rates going from $19.99 per month and annual memberships at $99.

This past fall, Alvarez sued DAZN and his former promoter Golden Boy for breach of contract as he was unable to get back to fighting.  He originally signed a $365 million deal with Golden Boy in which he would fight exclusively on DAZN.  Despite the lawsuit, there are no hard feelings with DAZN as Alvarez soon found a fight with Callum Smith.

Also, of note, Gennady Golovkin returns to the ring the night before in a fight in Florida. The two are long-rumored to fight a third match in the future.

Payout Perspective:

The deal with inDemand allows DAZN to gain more traction with those that don’t have access to the digital platform and/or just want to see the fight.  The offer to a subscription does entice those casual viewers in seeing the DAZN product and maybe staying on as a subscriber past the initial offer.

I feel it is a good value at the $99.00 per year rate. I did drop it from April thru September for obvious reasons. I am hoping they re-up with some of the MMA companies upon re-start. This is a brilliant idea to promote the platform.

It seems that TKO has really screwed up WWE/Wrestlemania with ads and celebs and getting away from the heart of pro wrestling - and talented performers are paying the price.
