Another fight off UFC 256 and a coach sidelined due to COVID-19

December 10, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Two more positive COVID-19 tests have affected this Saturday’s UFC 256 in Las Vegas.  Notably Farah Hannoun of MMA Junkie reports that the Jared Vanderaa-Sergey Spivak scheduled for this weekend is off due to COVID-19.

I can confirm reports that Jared Vanderaa vs. Sergey Spivak is OFF #UFC256. Vanderaa tested positive for COVID-19, per sources.

In addition, Charles Oliveira’s head coach Diego Lima will not be able to corner “Do Bronx” as he has tested positive for COVID-19.  Oliveira is in the co-main event against Tony Ferguson.  Lima is asymptomatic but will have to sit out being in his fighter’s corner.

The 29-8, 1 no-contest Oliveira will be cornered by Jorge Patino and Gia Santos.

The heavyweight fight between Vanderaa (11-4) -Spivak (11-2) fight was to be a part of the early-prelim card on ESPN+.

Payout Perspective:

Thus far, four fights have been pulled from this Saturday’s lineup due to a COVID-19 diagnosis.  While the UFC has done well during the pandemic, the rise in COVID-19 positive tests is hitting the company as well.  The hope is that the UFC can maintain its main card to salvage this PPV.
