Luke Campbell, Ryan Garcia’s opponent, tests positive for COVID-19

November 10, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Ryan Garcia, Golden Boy Boxing’s biggest star after the promotion parted ways with Canelo Alvarez has received a bit of bad news as his opponent for his fight December 5th has tested positive for the coronavirus.  Luke Campbell appears to be asymptomatic as the parties attempt to reschedule the bout.

The fight was going to be at the forefront of DAZN’s “global expansion.”  Recently, Alexander Povetkin had to put off his fight with Dillian Whyte after he was hospitalized due to COVID-19.  The news that Campbell is out is bad news for Golden Boy and DAZN as it tries to put itself past Canelo-talk.

Unfortunately @luke11campbell tested positive for Covid 19. He has completed isolation and resumes training shortly but will not be fit for Dec 5. We are working on a new date with @GoldenBoyBoxing and @DAZNBoxing and only anticipate a very short delay to this great fight.

Payout Perspective:

Maybe the fact that Canelo Alvarez is not going to face Caleb Plant in December lifts a little sting from Golden Boy and DAZN.  But a Ryan Garcia fight would have certainly washed away some of the loss of Canelo by both companies.  They will still have a chance to highlight Garcia but its unlikely that this happens anytime soon.

I should point out that according to those at TKO that the ESPN/MVPW boxing deal is a revenue sharing agreement similar to the original AEW/Turner deal in 2019 and not a full paying media rights deal which Top Rank had and wasn't renewed.
