Santos tests positive for COVID-19, fight with Teixeira postponed

September 16, 2020 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Thiago Santos has tested positive for COVID-19 and his fight with Glover Teixeira set for October 3 is off the card.

Originally the fight was scheduled to be the main event of the September 12 event but Teixeira tested positive for COVID-19.

Thiago Marreta está fora da luta contra Glover Teixeira, marcada para o UFC do dia 3 de outubro, em Las Vegas (EUA). O carioca, que pisaria no octógono pela primeira vez no ano, testou positivo para Covid-19. #feedMMA

The news was first reported by Marcelo Barone.

Santos has not fought since July 2019 when he had a strong outing against Jon Jones but fell short in a split decision loss.  During that fight he suffered injuries to both knees.  His fight against Santos would have been his first since that fight.  Teixeira is experiencing a career renaissance after winning four straight in the light heavyweight division including a win against Anthony Smith.

Payout Perspective:

This is another fight taken out due to COVID-19.  The testing protocol is a necessity to prevent the spread of Coronavirus but it means that the UFC has to scramble to find new fights or replacements.
