Cerrone-Ferguson slated for UFC 238 in Chicago

May 10, 2019 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

ESPN reports that Donald Cerrone will get a quick turnaround fight as he welcomes back Tony Ferguson for next month’s UFC PPV from Chicago.

Cerrone defeated Al Iaquinta in a 5 round main event in Ottawa last week while Ferguson has been on the sidelines since a TKO victory over Anthony Pettis at UFC 229 in October.  Personal issues have sidelined Ferguson as his wife had filed a temporary restraining order against him concerned for the family’s safety including the fighter but it was dropped late last month.  The UFC has indicated that it is providing Ferguson with the assistance he needs to deal with the personal issues.  The two are scheduled to meet at UFC 238 at the United Center in Chicago.

The current headliner for that event is Henry Cejudo taking on Marlon Moraes for the Bantamweight title.  Also, Valentina Shevchenko is set to defend her Flyweight title against Jessica Eye.

Payout Perspective:

Hopefully Ferguson has been able to address the issues he had this past winter and is able to focus on getting back into the Octagon. The Cerrone fight presents a very intriguing fight that many may lobby should be the main event of the evening.  Certainly, it does overshadow both championship fights but also boosts the interest level of this PPV.

Dana White and the UFC are struggling to sell out UFC 328 despite a stacked card, with ticket prices starting around $350 likely playing a role.

That said, it’s not just the UFC—even MVP events with $70 tickets have had trouble filling arenas, suggesting a broader trend.
