USA Today reports that the November 5th fight between Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas deliver “a little over 300,000” PPVs according to Bob Arum. The event was the first event in years without support without HBO as its PPV distributor.
Pacquiao defeated Vargas via unanimous decision and won a welterweight title in the process. Arum indicated that the buy rate was similar to Pacquiao-Bradley III last April. The initial report from ESPN on Pacquiao’s fight last April was between 400-500K PPV buys.
Pacquiao-Vargas: ~300K PPV buys
Pacquiao-Bradley III: ~400-500K PPV buys
Pacquiao-Mayweather: 4.4M PPV buys
Pacquiao-Algieri: ~300K PPV buys
Pacquiao-Bradley II: ~750-800K PPV buys
Payout Perspective:
Arum intimated in the article that he will not need HBO as its PPV distributor based on the results of this event. If you saw the PPV, Arum is focusing on Asia for Pacquiao in terms of sponsorship and revenue. The card was stacked with Asian fighters and Chinese sportswear maker, Anta, was a visible sponsor for the event. We shall see if Top Rank can recoup some of its losses in the domestic market with international gains.
Fight Fan says
Justice for a fight that shouldn’t have even been on ppv
Wil says
Agreed, it shouldnt have been on ppv, but seems like an easy 20m+ revenue, not adding in gate and sponsorship. One wonders how much Arum made off of his rights in China. No matter what, without a legit opponent who has KO power or otherwise one of the true top guys in the division, manny can say goodbye to the 500K plus ppv buys. And his style has become somewhat tedious, I liked him more when he was really beating folks up, I think that Marquez knockout really made him gun shy
Joey Vegas says
What Mayweather and Pacquiao have done is the pinnacle of achievement career wise. When they battled the world stopped and watched. I cry like a Citizen of North Korea speaking about Kim Jong Ung when speaking about both of these men.
War Drums should start sounding like Pacquiao vs Canelo I do think that is a box office success.
d says
No way that hit 300k. Just a Bob Arum spin maneuver. Probably did around 200k at most. This wasn’t even distributed by HBO.
Fight Fan says
D either way the fight bombed and it is justice for what arum try’s to pull on the fans. Pac is equally to blame for accepting these cherry fights.
turd says
arum, oscar , and haymon have managed to kill the sport
Chris says
Yeah fight didnt do well but without HBo this is what you expect. having HBO/Showtime is important.
Think they are gonna push for Floyd rematch. Even if they do half the numbers first fight did its a 2 million buy PPV and huge payday for everyone.
Diego says
Not a great PPV buy for not a great fight. Pacquiao ducked Crawford and that’s when HBO said “no thanks”. Good for HBO to say no to mismatches that no one wants to see – even if 50% of the mismatch is a popular fighter. If HBO and Showtime keep paying to air crap, promoters will keep serving up crap. Now maybe Arum can put Pacquiao in a real fight.
Diego says
Speaking of airing crap – did anyone catch the Luis Ortiz v. Malik Scott fight? What an embarrassment for the sport. On HBO no less.

Hahahahaha.good for pacman….vargas is not popular in the 147 division….so pacman has a solid 300k fans…that was his numbers before dela hoya

tops E says
100 million chinese viewers….china president watching….arum hit a home run with tv rights from china
turd says
tops you are delusional at best.
d says
Key focus on “at best”.
There was no money for that fight upfront which is why Pacquaio had a weak purse compared to previous ones. The ppv bombed also. Rumor is the actual number was around 200k buys.
tops E says
Hahaha…facts are facts hahaha…money money money…global….anta the shoe company overtook nike in china….east and west combine….japan also had a boxer in the same card shown in the wowow channel over there..which used to cover the ufc…but canceled it
Caramel City says
Its been tallied at 285k but will surface around 305k probably
D has no rumors besides the one he fabricates.
Won’t believe that Manny Pacquiao, a global superstar, can do 300k, but believes that Conor got over 1.5 million ppvs ever. He never did buddy.
As for Manny. He is still a giant star in the world and more particular, Asia.
As for America, his time is basically up. Everyone got the Mayweather-Pacquiao match and unless he does a rematch, his numbers will stay in the 300k-600k depending on who he is fighting.
Now, if Manny fought Canelo, then yes that would do 2m-2.5m.
Conor highest mark, according to people who actually know, is 1.2m
Diego says
Prior to the fight, Top Rank Inc. CEO Bob Arum had told Bev Llorente of ABS-CBN North America News Bureau how Pacquiao would earn less than usual from this fight because of the way his percentage deal was structured: “No, he is not earning $20 million. He is earning a lot less because…he is fighting largely on percentage. So hopefully the Filipinos, the Mexicans fight fans support the fight so he can make $20 million or more.”

Pacman is making $4-5 M. That’s a lot less than the $20M he used to make when doing HBO PPVs. You’re not going to convince me that these new Chinese TV rights are making up for the PPV shortfall. If they were, Pacman would be making more. If Pacquiao had a real opponent, they could have done both PPV and Asia TV rights.

“Its been tallied at 285k but will surface around 305k probably”
You are getting this information from Bob Arum who is a compulsive liar. No one is verifying this number. There have been a few boxing bloggers who have already reported that this is coming in around 200k which is much more believable based on the surrounding circumstances.
McGregor on the other hand has a reputable third party validating his numbers. In fact, those are on the lower end as streaming numbers through the ufc’s website are not included with those figures. There is much more integrity to those Meltzer numbers than anyone’s numbers in boxing. In boxing, the majority of time the generally accepted numbers from the boxing community are coming from the promoter which is embarrassing to the sport. How many times has Bob Arum been called out by people in boxing for fabricating numbers? It seems like it is routine. You are delusional.
Manny would never get anywhere near 2m buys with Canelo. They might, if lucky hit a million and a half.
FYI, McGregor has hit 1.6m already, and for 205, I bet it is even higher.
The boxing fanboys really hate reality.
d says
Yeah tops, money money money. Haha. That’s why Zou Shiming made a whopping 5k. That’s why Pacquaio made less in this fight than he ever has since his championship run began.
That’s how much money is coming from Asia.
