Is “Money” coming back?

May 4, 2016 by Jason Cruz 22 Comments

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. may be returning from his short retirement based on a couple trademarks filed late last month with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

In an interview with Showtime this past Saturday, the 49-0 fighter maintained he is staying out of the ring but conceded he has had talks with CBS and Showtime about returning to the ring.

Perhaps evidence of his possible return was the trademark filings which relate to the fighter winning 50 fights.  “TMT 50” (“TMT” an acronym for “The Money Team”) and “TBE 50” (“The Best Ever”) were filed on April 21, 2016.  The owner/applicant of the marks is Mayweather Promotions, LLC.

Mayweather has a vast trademark portfolio to capitalize and protect his businesses.

Payout Perspective:

Is Floyd coming back?  Do the trademark filings mean anything?  Or, are they just to protect his brand and business?  Will his return matter?  All good questions for the boxing world.  But, if he were to return, it would seem that Mayweather could not just come back against anyone.  His last fight with Andre Berto did poorly on PPV and its unlikely he would come out of retirement against a viable challenger.

I’m sure he can clock 300-500k PPVs against the right can. The question is, will he bother?

A rematch with Manny is going to not be seen by a lot of people and may not make financial sense for the promoters with all the guarantees they will have to offer the fighters. They used up a lot of goodwill with the last fight.

it would have to be against the winner of Alvarez-Khan, Garcia, Golovkin, or the winner of Thurman-Porter for it to break 1m PPVs I would think.

No way he fights anyone competitive if he comes back which will mean he will get paid a fraction of what he made for his last fight.

Hey Jason, are you guys going to cover this new PBC lawsuit? It seems like it carries a lot of weight considering Caldwell jumped ship from the fund to PBC.

If he has another fight he’d probably pick a guy like Danny Garcia. He’s more popular than Berto so the buy rate will be bigger but he’s also flawed enough to be a sure win.

    Mayweather would kill him.
No way that fight happens. Dana wouldn’t allow it.

In mma, kickboxing, checkers, chess, and anything else competitive, McGregor would destroy him, but in boxing, Mayweather would win.

    @The Weakest,

By the way, you lied about how much Khan was making for this fight he has coming up. His purse was reported as being 2m, not 13m like you claimed. Canelo’s purse is 3.5m also.

Why do you make things up all the time?

@ The Greatest, Unless I’m wrong, I think his UFC contract prevents McGregor from fighting for another MMA promotion, but he can compete in grappling or boxing. I could be wrong, but we’ve seen it happen with other UFC fighters.

JF, you are incorrect, he can’t compete in any type of physically demanding sporting event. Only with the UFC’s permission can he compete in boxing, grappling, etc and they would never allow that to happen.

“$13M including uk money and ppv money. Thats what i read”

In other words, that’s what someone fabricated.

If his purse was only 2m, and he is on the B side, unless this was a very big ppv, it is unlikely he gets anywhere close to 13m.

Mayweather would probably win a MMA match as well, simply because Conors not a grappler.

You get an elite grappler, than things might be different. Either Floyd catches him or the grappler gets a hold of Floyd. Id still favor Floyd due to his intelligence and his incredible timing, gauge on distance, and speed.
But when it comes to Conor, Id easily favor Floyd. Conors ego would get in the way and hed try to stand with Floyd and Floyd would KO him quick with 4oz gloves.

In a boxing match Floyd wins hands down in quick destructive fashion.

Also there is no point of really discussing this at all, since its NEVER going to happen.

Mayweather would lose to every single contracted UFC fighter. He would also lose to every single mma fighter that presently fights above a high school gym level. Amateur wrestlers would also destroy him in a mma fight. I would take janitors and librarians over him in a mma fight as well. He has no idea how to fight.

You can throw the grappling away, add 10oz gloves, and McGregor would also destroy him in kickboxing because Mayweather would have no idea how to deal with kicks.

Floyd Mayweather also has no intelligence, he would have timing in kickboxing either because he doesn’t know how to kickbox and his timing would be destroyed by the kicks. He would be oblivious as to dictating the distance, etc.
