PBC on Spike TV draws 513,000 viewers

May 2, 2016 by Jason Cruz 51 Comments

PBC on Spike TV this past Friday night drew 513,000 viewers a cording to Sports TV Ratings.  The ratings show a 40% drop from its April 1 event.

In the main event, Andre Dirrell defeated Blake Caparello despite Direll being knocked down in the fight.

According to Sports TV Ratings, it registered just 180,000 viewers in the adult 18-49 demo.

PBC on Spike
3/13/2015 869,000
4/24/2015 569,000
5/22/2015 772,000
6/12/2015 446,000
8/14/2015 679,000
9/11/2015 581,000
10/16/2015 315,000
11/13/2015 466,000
4/1/2016 873,000
4/29/2016 513,000

Payout Perspective:

A bad night for boxing as it was overshadowed by Day 2 of the NFL Draft and the NBA Playoffs.  Yet, the ratings reflect the diminishing appeal of PBC on Spike TV as it seems (based on viewership) that the boxing fan is not enthused by the fighters on these cards.  The following night, PBC on Fox posted its worst ratings since airing on the network despite a rematch of a very entertaining first fight.

You think as a football fan Im goin to sit down and watch the Jaguars vs the Browns, just because i like football? Absolutely not.

The UFC is brand driven, boxing is star driven

Kovalev-Caparello did 1M viewers over a year or so ago.

The fact that this even did 513k is a testament to boxings greatness.

Nothing gets people interested in TV like the fights. Out of the flop that was May-Pac came a renewed interest in the sport of boxing again. Don and Bob are older now and the sport really relies on Oscar and Al Haymen and Floyd to continue on. Boxing strives to persevere..

    “Spin what?
No boxing fan cared about this fight.”

    Obviously. That was the point.

“You think as a football fan Im goin to sit down and watch the Jaguars vs the Browns, just because i like football? Absolutely not.”

Yet Bellator does better ratings with no named headliners and guys ranked no where near the top 50. And the worst football ratings still get multi million viewers.

    “The UFC is brand driven”

If that was the case, why did McGregor do 1.5m buys while D. Johnson does 100k?

    “boxing is star driven”

And they have no stars. Haha.

“Kovalev-Caparello did 1M viewers over a year or so ago.”

This is probably a lie and you are digging up old fights, hahahaha.

“The fact that this even did 513k is a testament to boxings greatness.”

Infomercials do better ratings. 513k viewers and 180k in the 18-49 is an epic failure.

Bellator does about what PBC does on Spike.
Also Boxing has alot more divisions, so factor that into the equation.
Alot more fighters, alot more shows.

MMA or really the UFC is only on what 2-3 channels?

Boxings on numerous channels. CBS, Showtime, HBO, ESPN, FS1, NBC, FOX, Spike TV, Tru TV, CBSSPORTSNETWORK, numerous Spanish networks.

If you were to add them all up compared to every MMA show on tv, boxing would have more viewers by a wide margin, and thats not including global numbers where its no even comparable.

Not true. They have plenty of bigger named boxers. A few top ten p4p fighters.

The UFC fights on FOX are NOT the biggest named fighters out there. They almost never have a title fight on FOX or FS1 and it is a fair comparison. You just don’t like the reality of the situation that the UFC succeeded on the networks, while boxing failed miserably.

“Canelo on FOX would do 10m viewers.”

Let me guess” That doesnt matter, only America matters”. You can’t claim that when your biggest star isnt American.

Also the fact that Anthony Joshua makes more money than any UFC fighter EVER, while only having 16 fights also proves that.

AJ made $8M+ last fight. This is known. No debates or anything.

All big draws who command the biggest paydays and none of them are on PBC.

GGG isnt on PBC, neither is Terrance Crawford or Sergey Kovalev, or Andre Ward or Bernard Hopkins even.

The biggest star on PBC is probably Danny Garcia and Adrien Broner, or maybe even Santa Cruz.

Those guys are have no where near the drawing power of Canelo, Pacquiao or Klitschko.

Canelo was pulling 2.3M on HBO.

But all of his money is coming from US produced shows. Not UK/Ireland, etc.

This is another one of your delusions. Joshua makes less than dozens of UFC fighters. No debates….in your mind. But in reality, this was clearly a fabrication.

By the way, McGregor was guaranteed 10m up front against Diaz for UFC 200. That’s more than ANY boxer gets these days. John McCarthy, Lorenzo Fertitta and Conor McGregor all confirmed this. That’s far more evidence than anything you’ve ever presented.

Yes, boxing is a big sport worldwide and even in the US if you add up total views.

Yes, PBC is doing very poorly on network TV (and burning through their cash) for the reasons we have all mentioned before – they don’t put on compelling fights.

Hahaha. Pac is retired. Always funny when you throw in retired boxers. His last fight also LOST money.

Thurman, and Lara are both top 10 p4p boxers according to most rankings and they fight on PBC. Khan has fought on PBC, he is ranked in the top 15. Garcia & Stevenson are top 20. That’s 5 fighters in the top 20 alone. Plenty of “talent” in PBC. You also called Broner the next Mayweather…hahahaha.

UFC on FOX is not for their top draws, it is their secondary draws. The second these guys become big, they go to ppv, the same can NOT be said for boxing.

“Canelo was pulling 2.3M on HBO.”

With the help of Mayweather-Pacquaio 1st’s tv broadcast. Canelo didn’t do anywhere near that on a consistent basis.

“You’re a fool if you dont think he does at least 5M on network tv”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! It didn’t take long for you to cut your prediction in half. What happened to 10m?

Diego, it isn’t just about not putting on compelling fights. It is a variety of things: they are overpaying their headliners, they don’t do the same numbers in the key demo that the UFC does which was their focus, and even if they were to put on compelling fights, the numbers eventually decline, then plateau at a certain point like the UFC’s did. If PBC were to put out that same fight card from their debut, they would be doing at best around 3m viewers, and likely less than that at this point. That is unsustainable when you pay guys 6,7,8m dollar purses and have heavy overhead costs.

Because Pacquiao, Top Rank, and Arum have all made millions upon millions. Top Rank losing money on this means nothing at all.
Pacquiao still made more than any UFC fighter ever and that’s really all WE care about in this argument.

Remember the main argument in all this is generally which sport is more popular and which fighters make more money. The answer is boxing/boxers.

“Because Pacquiao, Top Rank, and Arum have all made millions upon millions. Top Rank losing money on this means nothing at all.”

Yes it does. It means they most millions upon millions for this fight. Boxing promotion is a bad business to get into. They have such a high risk, and little reward.

“Pacquiao still made more than any UFC fighter ever and that’s really all WE care about in this argument.”

Yeah, and the UFC made more money than every boxing promoter combined this year and has so for years.

“Remember the main argument in all this is generally which sport is more popular and which fighters make more money. The answer is boxing/boxers.”

No, that is your argument and you are wrong about popularity. These discussions typically center around which events make more money and the fact is, the UFC events are trouncing boxing.

“He does about 25M viewers in Mexico.”

And does zero ppv buys. Those are tv contracts in Mexico and only generate a few million. PPV generates a lot more.

“If they did PPVs in Mexico, I think he can easily do 1M.
Hes a huge star down there.”

They wouldn’t do 100k buys, there is little money for that in Mexico. If they could do 1m buys in Mexico or even a fraction of that, it would be on ppv.

“Amir Khan set to make $13M for his fight against Canelo.
    Lets hear it D.”

I don’t trust anything you say to be accurate, but if he is getting 13m up front, that means Canelo is getting more, and that also means this event will likely lose money for the promotion. Too much money to cover. Where’s the money?

So let’s get this on the record, you are saying boxing is going to have a ppv hit 4m buys this year? Do you think they will have the top ppv draws this year?

More than likely what is going to happen is that the top 3-4 ppvs this year buys wise will be UFC’s. There is nothing on the horizon for boxing. This fight with Canelo-Khan is the biggest fight of the year for boxing and I don’t believe it will even hit 1m buys. Even if it does get around 1m, it certainly won’t be the biggest ppv of the year. No way it hits what the UFC has already done or what they will do when Rousey fights at MSG later this year.

More of your delusions. 196 has been estimated by Meltzer to have done somewhere in the range of 1.2-1.5m ppv buys. That’s also not included streaming ppv buys. MMAPAYOUT gets their number from Meltzer, they are just waiting for a final number to come in. This is the first of many 1m+ ppvs the UFC will have this year. If boxing hits 1 this year, they will be very fortunate.
