Tate-Nunes announced for UFC 200

April 7, 2016 by Jason Cruz 11 Comments

The UFC announced on Wednesday that Miesha Tate would be making her first title defense of her women’s bantamweight title against Amanda Nunes at UFC 200.  The matchup steers past the potential rematch with Holly Holm.

Nunes is the 4th ranked women in the bantamweight division.  Holm’s agent, Lenny Fresquez said that Tate turned down the rematch with Holm in order to fight Nunes.  He was told that the decision was Tate’s and not the UFC’s.

Notably, MMA Junkie reported that Holly Holm was offered Cyborg Santos at UFC 198 in Brazil but turned it down in hopes of a rematch with Tate.

Payout Perspective:

Curious matchmaking?  If what Fresquez tells the hometown paper is true, then some fighters have leverage on who they take for fights.  It’s clear that a rematch of Holm-Tate would make more sense than a Conor-Diaz rematch.  Yet, it appears that Holm will not get her rematch.  If you are a cynic, you might suggest that the UFC offering Holm Cyborg in Brazil was done in jest since Holm’s representation and the UFC have reportedly had contentious business dealings.  And, Holm did not want to wait for a Rousey rematch.  Instead, she wanted to remain busy and fight Tate.  Or, it’s because Holm defeated the UFC’s top star at the time, Ronda Rousey.  Regardless, the Tate-Nunez matchup is not an exciting matchup or a bigger sell as opposed to Hom-Tate II.

Its because Holm dominated her until the submission and would probably beat her this time around. Holms a real athlete with a real desire to be the best.
They rather Tate beat Nunes and have Tate give the bely back to Rousey

Hahahaha. More like Holm was embarrassed badly because she has zero grappling skills and her kickboxing doesn’t translate to ground fighting. Holm was also dominating nothing in that fight. Had it gone to decision it would have been a draw and Tate did far more in the fight than Holm did. Miesha would beat her 10x out of 10. Holm was exposed. She will be out of the top 5 by the end of the year, everyone knows how to beat her now.

Very true, anyone remember when Dana the clown said women would never fight in the ufc? Talk about someone who flip flops and will do anything for a quick buck.

This card could definitely be better. The Aldo-Edgar fight is interesting, but the other main event fights leave something to be desired.

Groundfighting doesn’t translate to MMA. It took Tate how many rounds to submit Holm?

UFC nutthuggers seem to think that groundfighting is enough to win any fight. Good luck taking Mayweather to the ground in a ring. Assuming you survive his first series of punches.

I think Nunes – Tate makes a lot of sense. Holms needs to get another win under her before challenging for the title. It would be different if she actually defended her title at least once.

Not really interested in this card, will pass on this one. I think Tate wants the easy path to a Rousey big money fight.

According to Tate’s manager, Josh Jones, a rematch with Holm was never on the table.

“A fight with Holly Holm was never discussed when we met with the UFC,” Jones said to MMA Fighting. “We all agreed that Miesha should fight the best available, and at this time it’s Amanda Nunes, who is currently on a three-fight win streak.”

    What a surprise, Lenny lied.
