White blames Holm’s manager for taking Tate fight

March 9, 2016 by Jason Cruz 14 Comments

Dana White is blaming Holly Holm’s manager for her loss at UFC 196 this past Saturday according to an ESPN report.  White blames Holm’s manager Lenny Fresquez for pushing Holm to take a fight prior to a rematch with Ronda Rousey.

Prior to the UFC 196, White admitted that he did not like the matchup with Miesha Tate due to business reasons.  It was clear that he believed that there was a possibility that Tate could win and would halt any momentum for a big-time rematch between Holm and Rousey.

If you recall, Holm, her representatives and the UFC went back and forth on financial terms before signing with the company.  Perhaps this latest statement is rehashing an old wound from those negotiations.

Holm signed a new deal with the UFC at the beginning of the year.  It was reported that Holm made at least $500,000 in her first title defense on Saturday night.

Payout Perspective:

At first glance, it seems odd that White attempted to hold back Holm from fighting to ensure a potential re-match with Rousey later this year.  UFC 196 did very good business if we rely on all of the indicators.  Yet, White realizes that having Holm fight prior to her rematch was a gamble.  If she lost, which she did, it hurts the promotion of the rematch.  But, is it really fair to ask Holm to sit out almost a year to wait for Rousey?  Holm is 34 years old and you wonder how many more years could she fight at a high level.  Clearly a Holm-Rousey rematch would have done well on PPV but it would mean holding Holm out until Rousey came back from her movie obligations.  The underlying issue here is that the champion is actually waiting for the ousted former champ in accommodating her needs.  If I was Holm’s management, this would not sit well with me.

White blames Holmes’ manager? White is the one who put the fight on.

I think while the outcome may be bad for Holmes, it’s good for the sport. Now we have real competition at the top of the division.

Diego, there always was real competition. There is no better evidence of this than how Tate just got done beating Holm. She’s been around for a long time.

Diego, agreed, not sure he has any ground to blame Holms manager when he has the final say on the matchmaking. Im sure Holm wanted to fight, and not wait around for Rousey.
