Concern arises regarding Holm’s newest sponsor

January 15, 2016 by Jason Cruz 6 Comments

ESPN reports that UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm has signed a deal to endorse Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals.  The Norcross, Georgia company sells products that are banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Holm appears in an ad for the stimulant DMAA.  Dimethylamylamine is a synthetic drug sold as a dietary supplement.  It is used to enhance athletic performance and supplements containing DMAA promise weight loss, muscle building and performance enhancement.  The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has warned that DMAA may include health risks such as heart attack.

It does not appear that Holm uses any Hi-Tech product which might contain DMAA or any substance that might be banned.  According to the most recent USADA test reports, Holm has submitted to 7 drug tests.

Payout Perspective:

You may recall that Holm signed a deal last year with Intel Pharma, another company that sells supplements that contained banned substances by WADA.  The question is why would Holm sign a deal with another company that has products that are banned by WADA.  This would make one raise the question of whether Holm is taking the product.  Despite the clean drug tests, it creates a concern for her overall brand.  With a win over Miesha Tate in March, she could enhance her brand even more (which would include the chance at blue-chip sponsors) and it would probably be wise to drop these supplement companies.

As long as she passes her tests, who cares? Sponsors are not easy for mma fighters to come by and the UFC isn’t known for paying well. She needs to maximize her income while she’s on top.
