Rousey will not fight at UFC 200

January 13, 2016 by Jason Cruz 18 Comments

Yahoo! Sports reports that Ronda Rousey has requested more time off which will take her off the UFC 200 card in July.  This may be due to the start of the filming of the remake of “Roadhouse,” which Rousey stars has been pushed back.

Dana White told Yahoo! that the former women’s bantamweight champ would not be on the card.  Although nothing had been set for 200, it was a foregone conclusion that prior to the news Rousey would be on the card as it is set to be the biggest UFC card ever.  Despite the official announcement Tuesday of UFC 197, Conor McGregor and the winner of the Holly Holm/Miesha Tate fight would be on 200 with the latter meeting Rousey.

Is this a loss for the UFC?  Would UFC 200 have done the same without Rousey off the card?  We will see.

Payout Perspective:

With Rousey off the card, it will probably lose some steam due to the mainstream persona of Rousey.  But, the UFC will hope that Holm’s status will increase by July.  Either that, or the UFC will try to work to increase Tate’s brand.  For Rousey, the time off may be helpful for a variety of reasons.  We shall see if Rousey waits until the fall or even the December 2016 PPV to come back.

There it is. If she’s not fighting in July, then she’s going to be out most of the year. It looks like she’s decided to be an actress rather than a fighter. Good luck with that. She’s going to have to start watching her weight 24/7, not just at fight time. That red carpet can be very unforgiving.

Hopefully she’ll at least stay in the gym and learn some head movement.

What that woman has done is above and beyond what anyone has done. I mean, it’s just unbelievable what she’s done in the last three years,” White said of Rousey. “Anything we needed, she didn’t say no to anything; said no to nothing. She even took over responsibilities somebody else was supposed to have. So when she tells me she wants more time, you know what? She’s got it.”

DW on Rousey: translation she was my slave now she not hahaha…fighters would now fight DW

McGregor vs Edgar equals a million buys regardless of who is on the undercard.

Tops – Rousey may be leaving but Jones is back. Hell, even Nick Diaz may make it back in the second half of the year.

A Connor / Jon Jones fight @ 200 could do very well, especially with a W at 197. Even with a L, it would be still be a good combo. But if Connor cant fight, 200 wont do nearly as well as 100 no matter who else is headlining.

A Jones- Cormier headliner at UFC 200 with a solid co main, would do 1m buys.

UFC 200 will be fine. I think we will see the debut of CM Punk, the return of Jones, and obviously Conor on the card. We may even see a fight between GSP and Diaz. You never know, the UFC may even decide to finally sign Fedor to a short 1 – 2 fight contract starting at UFC 200. A rematch between Holms and Tate could also happen if the fight in March is close. I expect UFC 200 to be the first UFC ppv to eclipse 2 million buys.
