UFC 197 announces McGregor-RDA, Holm-Tate

January 12, 2016 by Jason Cruz 17 Comments

The UFC announced UFC 197 set for March 5, 2016 in Las Vegas which will feature two title fights as Conor McGregor will challenge for the lightweight title against Rafael Dos Anjos.  Holly Holm will make her first title defense of her women’s bantamweight title against Miesha Tate.

McGregor will seek to win two title in separate weight divisions.  After upsetting Ronda Rousey at UFC 193, Holm steps in against second-ranked Tate.

The event, which will be at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, is presented by EA Sports UFC 2.

Payout Perspective:

There were rumors that McGregor was holding up the announcement due to wanting more money.  However, according to Dave Meltzer it was the lightweight champion demanding more for the fight.  Can’t blame either scenario.  This event will be huge for the obvious reasons.  McGregor is a huge draw as shown from UFC 189 and 194.  While he’s not a draw, Dos Anjos comes off a Fox network demolishing of Donald Cerrone last month.  Thus, the matchup could not be better for the UFC.  Notwithstanding, Holm-Tate should be a great matchup.  We will see if Holm can sustain the momentum she earned this past November.  This card poses somewhat of a gamble for the company as many anticipate that McGregor will be at UFC 200 and the rematch between Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey will be on the same card.  If either loses, it might disturb momentum.  Certainly, if Tate wins, a third fight with Rousey would still sell.  But if McGregor loses, it might knock off some luster for the Featherweight champion.

Big gamble for UFC now Rousey is off 200. If Connor gets injured the UFC is screwed for their big show.

New cfo zoombio, connection with flash? Which is both owned by abu dhabi govt…and the new cfo worked for the company owned also by the govt

He worked for Citigroup in New York before, in 2007, moving to Dubai and joining Morgan Stanley. He had spent a year in the Emirates as a teenager and “fell in love with the country.”
That led to a job with the Mubadala Development Company, the sovereign wealth fund of the government of Abu Dhabi. He spent four years there, responsible for international real estate investments.
“I didn’t have any exposure with the UFC but I had a lot of exposure through time with hotels and gaming,” he said.
In the wake of an Abu Dhabi-owned entertainment promotion company making a 10 per cent investment in the UFC, he suggested contacting UFC co-owners Lorenzo and Frank Fertitta about gaming given their casino roots in Las Vegas.

Too many big fights out there for UFC 200 to fall flat. If McGregor gets hurt, Jones- Cormier II still floating around, possible GSP comeback, Anderson Silva maybe, etc. UFC has too much star power to have a major issue there.
