GGG and Chocolatito impress on PPV

October 17, 2015 by Jason Cruz 5 Comments

Gennady Golovkin made a splash in his debut on top of the card of a PPV.  He stopped David Lemieux in the 8th round.  In addition, Roman “Chocolatito” Gonzalez stopped Brian Viloria in the co-main event.

According to multiple reports, 20,548 paid to see GGG-Lemieux at Madison Square Garden.

According to ESPN’s Dan Rafael, GGG received $2 million while Lemieux earned $1.5 million.  Both will earn PPV points dependent on the number of buys.

For the co-main event, Roman Gonzalez made $250,000.  Viloria earned $100,000.

Payout Perspective:

Is GGG a PPV star?  He was the 5th most-searched topic Saturday in the United States according to Google Trends.  The event’s two stars, Roman Gonzalez and GGG, both were impressive in stopping their respective opponents. We will see if this event will spur another GGG PPV in 2016.

Madison Square Garden was sold out & it definitely had that can’t-miss-big-event feel to it. Golovkin delivered impressively and is now a ‘name’ to not just boxing fans, he is entertaining, technical, aggressive & charismatic.. I believe he became a star after last night.

Cotto-Canelo will be absolutely huge, and Golovkin vs. the winner of that one could be bigger.

Hard to imagine either one making ppv points after the ppv flop.

I should point out that according to those at TKO that the ESPN/MVPW boxing deal is a revenue sharing agreement similar to the original AEW/Turner deal in 2019 and not a full paying media rights deal which Top Rank had and wasn't renewed.
