ESPN reports that Floyd Mayweather will earn at least $32 million for his fight Saturday night against Andre Berto. The challenger to Mayweather’s welterweight title will receive $4 million, the most of his career.
The earnings were revealed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission. The payout is a far cry from the $250 million he received for his fight with Manny Pacquiao on May 2nd.
Floyd Mayweather reported payouts (excluding PPV and other ancillary earnings) under Showtime:
Roberto Guerrero – $32M
Canelo Alvarez – $41.5M
Marcos Maidana I – $32M
Marcos Maidana II – $32M
Manny Pacquiao – $250M (originally projected at $180M)
Andre Berto – $32M
On the undercard, ESPN reports the following payouts as disclosed by the NSAC:
Roman Martinez ($300K) – Orlando Salido ($150K)
Badou Jack ($500K) – George Graves ($150K)
Jhonny Gonzalez ($50K) – Jonathan Oquendo ($50K)
Ishe Smith ($150K) – Vanes Martirosyan ($150K)
Payout Perspective:
In his last fight under the Showtime contract, and according to Mayweather, his last fight ever, this fight has seen the least amount of hype of the six. According to Darren Rovell, it is not a sellout at the MGM Grand. The get-in price as of Friday night is $324 with an abundance of tickets available above that price point. As a result, one might conclude that Mayweather will not enjoy the extra revenue from all of the ancillary resources such as gate, closed circuit and PPVs. Regardless, Mayweather will still collect at least $32 million in what will be his last fight.

Also, no way he made anywhere near 250m from the Pacquaio fight. The math doesn’t add up. Boxing promotions lie a lot.

The evidence is right there. They had to pay Mayweather 32m for that fight. They had to pay to produce the fight- that production costs millions. You have to pay announcers, pay for the film production, some promotion, etc. Lots of money. This probably cost Showtime around 40m. What did they get in return? What was their cut? This ppv probably literally only did around 500k buys- it bombed royally. . According to Dan Rafael in the past, Showtime didn’t start to profit from Mayweather’s ppvs until he goes over 1.1m buys. This clearly didn’t exceed that number. This was a massive financial loss for Mayweather and the syndication rights are a joke because no one cared about this fight.

Also, just to point out, Mayweather has had 6 fights for Showtime. 4 of the 6 not only didn’t make money up front, they lost money. They probably broke even overall with his contract even factoring in the rights to his fights, re-airings, etc. Probably just expected to use his name to spring board their other fights they have.

How much did the other 12 fighters make?
Showtime made money on all the fights. Mayweather tends to pay most things himself. Promotions, fees, the other fighters purses.
He writes alot of the checks but receives a big sum of the money.

Showtime pays him 32m genius. They then have to pay for the production- Mayweather doesn’t front that money, he pays for some of the promotion and the undercards, but doesn’t cover Showtime’s costs. Showtime is taking an absolute bath here.
They lost money on those events too, you just aren’t well informed.
A question for anyone who can answer it – do we know how much money HBO and Showtime made on Mayweather-Pacman after everyone who needed to get paid (fighers, promoters, etc) got their share? I’d be curious to see how the costs and revenues were split up.
I think Mayweather get’s a big chunk of money because he handles a lot of the promotion himself with the idea that the promotion will drive PPV buys. But if the fight doesn’t sell, he still gets his money and it’s Showtime that takes the loss. Again, if I were Showtime I would be disappointed in this fight – I would have been pushing for a fight with Amir Khan.
Diego, I’ve read several articles in the past detailing how HBO/Showtime make a very low percentage of the net from a ppv event. From what I’ve read they always prefer the fight to be free on their respective channels because of that low cut they receive and of course if it were a ppv quality fight, their ratings would be big. I’ve read that they only make about 5% of the net(when it is profitable), but I’m not positive how accurate that is. I also remember Rafael pointing out that the break even point for Showtime was around 1.1m ppv buys for Mayweather fights. That of course is not included in the re-airings which they profit from with sponsorship/paid viewership.
Also, I don’t believe Mayweather fronts a ton of money for his fights for the actual promotion- fairly certain most of it is done by Showtime. They pay for the full production from what I’ve read and a fair amount of the promoting of the fight-the rest he assumes.
As for Showtime pushing for a fight with Khan, I agree I’m sure they would have preferred that, but he has full control over who he fights, so really they have no choice in the matter.
Khan is a pest that is obsessed with mayweather and now that he’s gone he wants to fight Pac. Khan needs to avenge his losses and fight Garcia or Thurman.
