Dave Meltzer writing for MMA Fighting reports that UFC 190 featuring Ronda Rousey and Beth Correia drew an estimated 900,000 PPV buys. The number would make it the third PPV event this year to draw 800,000 buys.
UFC 189 featuring Conor McGregor vs. Chad Mendes drew 1 million buys according to UFC.com. Other estimates have the July 11 PPV less than 1 million. Regardless, it’s the second straight PPV that has done well based on just 1 fighter. UFC 189 it was all Conor McGregor and UFC 190 was all Ronda Rousey.
Perhaps supporting the contention that Ronda Rousey’s star is brighter than ever is that there were no noteworthy fights on the UFC 190 main card. Despite the fact the show went over 3 hours, there was nothing great on the card besides Rousey. There were two TUF Brazil final fights and Shogun Rua-Little Nog. In comparison, UFC 189 did have another title fight between Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler to entice fans to buy the PPV.
UFC 190 joins 189 and 182 as top events that have drawn 800,000 PPV buys or more. No PPV event went over 600,000 in 2014. In 2013, only 2 events (UFC 158 and UFC 168) went over 800,000 PPV buys.

Payout Perspective:
Early indicators from most outlets reflected the fact that UFC 190 did well on PPV. The prelims drew 1.3M viewers and google searches topped 6 million. All of these indicators would point to the fact that Ronda Rousey is, arguably, the top draw in the UFC. The card had little to support her and she was able to garner 900,000 fans. The PPV buy rate also reflects the fact that her star is gaining steam. One might expect her to draw similar numbers when she faces Holly Holm at UFC 195.

With another big event yet to come, this is a banner year for the UFC and a turn around from the last year. When you consider that both McGregor and Rousey are still young fighters, there is a lot of upside to take away from this. UFC 200 is looking to be huge if the stars continue to align for the promotion. Having the possibility of McGregor and Rousey on the same card points towards a record event (assuming that is the UFCs plan).

This must be really painful for the boxing trolls to realize the UFC is going to do 6 ppvs this year that will go over 600k buys and 4 that will go over 800k. But if and when they lose they will pass a lot of credibility and fame to who ever beats them if it’s the right person. To have two huge stars at the same time is huge for the UFC. If the ufc blows up like is very possible, and does so with their current access they have to network TV. It could be a game changer. If this happens fighters sponsors in the UFC will sky rocket. The value of sponsor Reebok has now will sky rocket for when the contract ends. Like I said it is very short sighted for anyone to leave the UFC unless the money gap is huge and you don’t have much time left in the sport.
If the Reebok deal jumps at the same rate it did for the NFL. Fighters would get between 40,000-400,000 per fight from the sponsor alone. Add to that increased fight pay and personal sponsors. Fighters would be where other athletes are finally!
People are shocked about this number, and everyone is giving Ronda praise for the number it drew. And Ronda deserves tons of credit….BUT one thing fight people often forget is that you need an oppnent to make money. The opponent does not have to be the best, like in Bethe’s case. But Bethe deserves a TON of credit for being smart enough to build herself up.
Another thing fight people often dismiss. Being a professional prize fighter also means building interest in the fight. You are your own promoter and need to promote the fight nearly as much as train for the fight. And regardless of your personal feelings towards Bethe, she did an excellent job of promoting the fight. She likely made life changing money from that fight.
