White estimates UFC 189 at $7.1 million

July 7, 2015 by Jason Cruz 19 Comments

UFC 189 will set a new gate record for MMA in the United States according to Dana White.  In an interview on the Jim Rome Show on Tuesday, White stated that despite the scratch of Jose Aldo, ticket sales have increased to an estimated $7.1 million.

The July 11th event should surpass the previous top gate of $6.9 million of Silva-Sonnen II three years ago.

White made the prediction that UFC 189 would do a $7 million gate during the world tour promoting Aldo-McGregor back in May.  It looks like his forecast looks on point.

Of course, the May 5th fight between Mayweather-Pacquiao did a $74 million gate in the same venue.  Still, the $7 million would be a great benchmark for the company.

Payout Perspective:

The increase in ticket sales may mean that fans anticipate a McGregor win.  Despite a very good co-main event featuring Rory MacDonald and Robbie Lawler, the main draw has been McGregor.  We shall see if the hefty attendance figure will equate to a respectable PPV buy rate.

Yeah, Mayweather-Pac does a 74m gate in the biggest boxing gate ever. What was the second highest gate in boxing this year? 1-2m? There is a massive drop off afterwards. The UFC can do a number of fights every year in the 4-7m range. Comparing the top boxing fight to the top UFC fight favors boxing, comparing the whole picture together and the numbers favor the UFC/MMA.

Come the Fall, Mayweather will retire and then boxing can kiss those big gates good bye.

so the UFC is popular but can only do a 7.1 million dollar gate but boxing is unpopular and can do 10 times that. got it.

sadly the aldo fight wont happen. when will the UFC stop promoting fights more than 2 months out. this sport has more weapons so fighters get hurt more. canelo vs cotto does more than this with less publicity. i can hear it now. well after a cotto vs canelo fight boxing will die.

Canelo vs Cotto is going to have just as much, if not more money invested into it- seeing how it will be the only other big boxing match this year. Not to mention this won’t do anywhere near Mayweather ppv numbers when he fights someone big.

The days of huge boxing ppvs are done with Mayweather. Everyone can see it other than boxing fans who are in denial. It’s going to be hysterical watching the boxing trolls attempt to spin boxing’s ppv numbers after Mayweather retires in the Fall.

even if they are done so what? what boxing proved with pac & mayweather is that when they have a star the will do HUGE ppv numbers. the ufc has huge stars up until last year and no one cared. thats a far more disturbing trend. one sport has little interest the other sport (boxing) has a talent pool problem but great demand and interest. nu,bers dont like 4.6 million ppv buys. ufc cant pass 1.3 million. ridiculous

So what????? The only two ppv stars over the past 8 years in boxing are on their way out and you don’t think that could be an issue to boxing’s ppv model???

Yeah, no one cares about ufc stars that’s why they are all over the movies, they have a legit network deal and the UFC demolishes boxing nearly every year in ppv buys. Haha.

You are right, numbers don’t lie, the UFC has outdrawn boxing in ppv buys and revenue in 7 out of the last 8 years. They have a network tv deal that boxing is desperately attempting to acquire, they get destroyed in the 18-49 demo across the board when matched up with the UFC.

Boxing is going the way of the dodo. Can’t wait until this fall when Mayweather retires and boxing ppv smacks right into that iceberg everyone can see coming a mile away.

Hey Gayest, the gate will be publicly disclosed to the athletic commission, it is kind of difficult to lie about that.
