Melendez suspended one year for failed UFC 188 drug test

July 6, 2015 by Jason Cruz 23 Comments

The UFC announced that Gilbert Melendez tested positive for “exogenous origin of testosterone metabolites” per a UFC press release.  The results originate from his June bout at UFC 188 in Mexico City.  He has been issued and accepted a one year ban from the company.

Per a portion the UFC press release:

The UFC has a strict, consistent policy against the use of any illegal and/or performance enhancing drugs, stimulants or masking agents by our athletes. As a result of the positive test, Melendez has accepted a one-year suspension, effective from the date of the bout, for violating the UFC Fighter Conduct Policy and Promotional Agreement with Zuffa, LLC.

The release also includes a statement from Melendez expressing remorse:

“Regrettably, I tested positive in my post fight urine sample for UFC 188,” Melendez said. “I did not inject anything, but I am responsible and accept the consequences for the results.  I will make sure I am better educated about the products I use and their implications. Going forward I will ensure no products I use will contain banned substances. I am sincerely apologetic to everyone who supports me, including my fans, sponsors and the UFC.  I value your trust and respect and will do everything in my power to keep it.”

Due to the suspension, Melendez is off of his July 15 fight against Al Iaquinta in San Diego.

Payout Perspective:

Perhaps the only solace for Melendez is that his infraction occurred a little over two weeks before the UFC-USADA drug policy kicked in on July 1st.  Still, his admission reveals that he either knew or did not want to know whether what he was using on his body was illegal.  In his statement, he makes a point that he did not “inject anything,” which may imply that the positive finding was a mistake due to lack of education.  But, there are products that are illegal where injection is not needed.  Thus, the semantics may mislead someone into thinking that Melendez is not guilty of wrongdoing.

Melendez signed a lucrative contract with the UFC last year which made him one of the highest paid fighters in MMA.  It is not known whether or not this drug test would negate his current contract.  He will now be out until next June.

Bhahahaha maybe Melendez should have hired D for dumb ass, as his steroid guru. D claimed to knows how to beat all the tests. “Just cycle off ” our moronic google fool once said about ped’s. D has never been in a gym in his life and has never even been to an mma event, and fight pass doesn’t count!!! bahahahahah
Another black eye for the ufc, too bad! Still waiting for all those ufc ppv numbers!! why the wait? D claims that the ufc dominated ppv without knowing 186 187 188 and others??? bahahahahha

How is this bad news? This is good news. It means they are doing a much better job than nearly every other sport is at testing their athletes. If boxing tested their fighters out of competition, you would see this begin to happen, of course they never will though which is why it- just like nearly every other sport remains a haven for PED use.

As for Sal’s rant, he has clearly gone of the deep end and is completely nuts. Reading that rant reminds me of watching the Virginia Tech shooter rant like the nutjob he was. Sal- stay away from schools, malls and University clock towers.

When you stop TRT or any PED’s, it takes a couple of month for your body to cycle out of it and return to “normal”. Let’s wait in the fall and see how different the fighters look. I’m sure it will be shocking in some cases.

We’ll see dominating fighters collapsing, we’ll see clean, second tier fighters suddenly fighting for the belt.

    Hey Sal
The numbers are out for 186 , 187, and 188… For some bizarre reason Mmapayout did not announce it in their news feed. Maybe because they were a big letdown?

Seems like 187 was a huge flop considering 2 of the most popular belts were on the line – not to mention Weidman who apparently should sell 500k next time LOL.
