Mayweather, Pacquiao top annual list of highest paid athletes

June 11, 2015 by Jason Cruz 38 Comments

Forbes announced its annual list of highest paid athletes.  As expected, boxer Floyd Mayweather, Jr. topped the list earning $300 million including endorsement deals.  His opponent, May 2nd, Manny Pacquiao landed second on the list.

Mayweather tallied $285 million in pay from June 2014 to June 2015.  He earned $100 million on fight night against Pacquiao but the revenue does not include PPV (which were an astronomical 4.4 million buys), gate ($73 million) and fight sponsorships ($13 million).  According to Forbes, the fight is expected to gross $600 million once the dust settles.  For his May fight, he also earned another $15 million in sponsorship money from Hublot, FanDuel and Burger King.  Mayweather’s earnings also include his September 2014 fight with Marcus Maidana.

Pacquiao landed second on the list earning $160 million.  The earnings include his November 2014 fight in Macau against Chris Algieri.  Pacquiao earned $125 million in pay from the Mayweather fight and $23 million from his Algieri fight.  He drew $148 in pay and drew $12 million in endorsements from a variety of sponsors including Nike, Foot Locker, Wonderful Pistachios, Nestle’s Butterfinger and a variety of Filipino sponsors.  Prior to the event, it was reported that Pacquiao would garner $2.25 million from sponsors on his trunks alone.

It’s the third time Mayweather has topped the list and his earnings set the record for athlete earnings in a year.  Tiger Woods earned $115 million in 2008 which was the previous record.

Wladimir Klitschko made the Forbes Top 100 paid athletes at #63 making $22.5 million.  There were no MMA fighters on the list.

Payout Perspective:

The list reflects the fact that boxing’s top stars command the most money.  Overall, the sport of boxing may not pay all of its fighters well, but the earning power of Mayweather and Pacquiao show that the sport is still a draw when there are big fights.  The money made by Mayweather this year is based on the split in revenue from the Pacquiao fight in which he controlled a dominant share of the money drawn from the event.  It’s unlikely we’ll see another athlete earn this much money in a 12 month span for a long time.

*Figures sourced by Leonard Ellerbe and Bob Arum.*

    Forbes has zero credibility.

Klitschko makes most of his money from endorsements, not fights also. He doesn’t fight on ppv because no one cares about him in the US.

Why do you say Forbes has no credibility?..

And if not them, can you recommend a good site to get this kind of info from?

Because they do zero investigative journalism. They speak with promoters and managers who are sociopathic liars for their information. And when they can’t, they literally just fabricate stats.

Forbes has a boxing writer covering most of their boxing figures. He sourced Bob Arum for the fight numbers literally and sourced Leonard Ellerbe for Mayweather’s pay.

I also recall a time where Forbes sourced Celebrity Net Worth (which is a low profile blogger) for GSP’s salary which was grossly undervalued. The guy at Celebrity Net Worth shortly later had the article removed because he realized how inaccurate it was and revised it entirely.

I can’t recommend a good site to gather this type of info because they are private figures that only the IRS and the fighters/promotion knows. Get me someone to publish their tax filings and then I will call that a reliable source. Until then, we can just look at supportive and surrounding information and I would never take a promoter or manager’s word for it- especially not those two. If Dana White were to be sourced when it comes down to fighter pay, etc. the boxing trolls would be calling it fraud to no end. But for some reason, when Bob Arum or Leonard Ellerbe make up delusional figures, those are accepted numbers???

Yep its a big conspiracy by Forbes against all other sports to make it look like Maypac are the highest paid athletes over all others. Hey D i noticed there aren’t any UFC fighters in any list anywhere. Must be a big conspiracy. Forbes can only go by whats reported and from the numbers out there you could give or take 10 or 20 million and it wouldn’t make a fucking difference you fuck tard. Let me know when a UFC champion makes the list

These figures are accurate, Mayweather has been the top athlete for years now. Dana is desperate for a new star, fact is Boxing is the #2 sport worldwide, Behind soccer. MMA does not have the same appeal worldwide and probably never will, they missed their window 5 years ago and now boxing is going full speed. Their is no incentive to fight for UFC when their fighters are all juiced up and get paid peanuts.

Hey retard, that article above directly sources Leonard Ellerbe for Mayweather’s numbers you colossal ass clown! The other series of articles they’ve written about that fight all were sourced directly from Bob Arum. Their writer in this case, Kurt Badenhausen, (who writes nearly all of their boxing/combat sports articles sources Arum nearly every article). You are just a sheepish moron who accepts anything that someone claims. If he were to say according to my contacts within the ppv industry like Meltzer does, then you would have a valid argument, but since you are a brain dead retard who can’t accept the fact that he’s going to have to change his name and continues to shameless live in denial here, you are doing everything you can in the mean time to save face. HAHAHAHA!! LEON THE SCHMO!!!!!

The most insane, delusional statements ever made. You are a quack!

By the way, boxer’s are more juiced up, they just aren’t tested out of competition.

Boxing also generates a fraction of what the major sports leagues do here, so your argument is a joke.

Regarding the payperview numbers, it was publicly reported by both HBO and Showtime. If they’re lying shareholders in Time Warner and CBS corp are going to be pissed when the quarterly K-1 comes out.

DirecTV, Verizon, AT&T and Verizon also reported at least 2.25 mil sales between them. Throw in In Demand with Cox, Time Warner, etc and 4.4 million total sales seems very probable.

John S, do me a favor, go do some research if HBO and Showtime sports have ever lied before. Espinoza lies every time he talks. Also, let me know when the quarterly numbers ever report anything to do with ppv buyrates or revenue. If that were the case, there would never be any of these arguments, the numbers would be published by every media outlet. They don’t because they aren’t released. Directv, Verizon, and AT&T reported nothing. That was reported by Kevin Iole and sourced by Bob Arum.

Iole didn’t get those numbers from Arum he got those numbers directly from the providers. His numbers also line up with what they told other members of the media.

    http://www.multichannel.com/blog/picture/maypac-set-ppv-perfomance-standard/390508

So unless there’s a vast conspiracy involving HBO, Showtime, Top Rank, Mayweather Promotions, Bob Elek of Verizon, Mike White of DirectTv, and inDemand, the match really did sell an ungodly amount of payperviews.

Uh, did you bother to read your source. It doesn’t provide any stats quoted from anyone other than Verizon’s 250k buys and the 1m from directv. Iole was claiming a number double that from the satellites.

I don’t believe that Verizon, DirectTv, In Demand, etc ever reported 4.4m buys as a whole, nor does their math add up to anywhere near that in any statements they’ve made.

I didn’t say the fight wasn’t huge. Of course it was. My point was that Iole, Arum, HBO/Showtime lie and exaggerated the number. If you don’t think all parties have been proven liars in the past about ppv numbers, you need to do better research.

One more thing- Kevin Iole DID get his information from Arum. He always does whenever he reports on a Top Rank promoted ppv. He does no research on anything ever.

Because the UFC doesn’t co promote with their fighters like boxing ppv headliners do. Boxing promoters wished they’d make even a fraction of what the UFC does annually. The UFC makes more money than every major boxing promotion combined annually.

Fight Fan, you literally just contradicted yourself. Can’t you boxing trolls even follow your own bullshit? You are saying that the UFC isn’t making profit in this post and in another you are saying how the UFC is making tons of money while the fighters are getting paid peanuts in another.

You should investigate what boxing banner promotions make. They don’t make shit. When co promoting with big stars, they often lose money. The UFC doesn’t because as you implied, they don’t give away the farm to the fighters like boxing promoter’s do. Boxing events lose money far more often than ufc events do. Way more overhead for boxing due to inflated purses and too many hands in the ppv- ie HBO/Showtime, Banner Promoter, Fighters.

The UFC also gets paid 100m per year for a tv deal, meanwhile PBC loses millions every day. Boxing doesn’t have the merchandising deals that the UFC has.
