Ratings from Saturday night’s events on HBO-Showtime

April 23, 2015 by Jason Cruz 18 Comments

ESPN’s Dan Rafael reports the ratings from Saturday’s boxing events on HBO and Showtime.  The shows went head to head with two intriguing main events.

HBO had the much anticipated fight between Lucas Matthysse and Ruslan Provodnikov drew 1.243 million subscribers and peaked at 1.38 million.

Rafael also reports that the fight between Julio Cesar Chavez-Andrzej Fonfara on Showtime drew 618,000 viewers with a peak of 836,000.  Fonfara upset Chavez in the latter’s return to the ring.  The last time Chavez fought was on an HBO card that drew an average of 1.4 million HBO subscribers.  On the Showtime undercard, the fight between Amir Iman and Walter Castillo averaged 346,000 viewers with a peak at 427,000.

Prior to the Matthysse-Provodnikov fight, Terrence Crawford knocked out Thomas Dulorme.  That fight drew 1.0004 million viewers peaking at 1.084 million viewers.  Crawford’s last fight on HBO in December drew 836,000 subscribers of the premium network peaking at 936,000 viewers.

Payout Perspective:

In addition to dueling boxing events, Saturday night was the UFC on Fox, NHL and NBA Playoffs so there was lot for sports fans to pick.  However, for boxing fans the big event of the night was the showdown between Matthysse and Provodnikov which many thought was a draw despite Matthysse pulling out the victory.  It was also a nice bounce back for Terrence Crawford in terms of viewers as he had disappointing numbers in December despite being backed by a Pacquiao replay.  This time, being linked with Matthysse-Provodnikov likely helped too.  Yet, the average for Chavez Fonfara has to be considered a disappointment based on Chavez’ name value.  Of course, it could be extrinsic factors about JCC that may turn boxing fans off

both you guys are retards!! showtime is in millions less homes then HBO and both are in 100 million less homes then Fox.. Nice try, so sat boxing did 1,589,000 and ufc did 2.43 million on free network TV. One group pays for content the other gets it for free its a big difference. But im sure neither of you 2 have hbo or showtime because you’re not fight fans. hahah
hey suck on this!!! so much for the ufc being soooooo big in Canada haha, looks like another shit show for ufc!! hahahaha btw boxing had a massive event in the same arena recently both you 2 are armature ass clowns

Didnt stop you from comparing a show on network tv to a show on cable, you do realize networks like NBC, Fox, CBS are in more homes than FS1, right?

WTF are you talking about not fight fans? I’m actually a real fight fan and watch both boxing and UFC events unlike you who doesnt watch mma and just comes to shit on it like a clown.

Yeah that 186 card is gonna flop, injuries killed it, Rampage was on then off then on again at last minute, lost its main event, lost Rory fight. SO they are gonna have a bad event. It happens.

Shit LHW champ of the world just had a fight a few weeks ago in Canada and did 5k tickets sold. They cant all be big.

And since GSp retired the UFC has def moved away from Canada, they focused more on Brazil, now Mexico and Europe more. Canada def took a major backseat, they didnt have someone to replace GSP. ROry is just coming up but he’s not there yet and dont think he’ll ever be close to what GSP was. Its why they are doing less and less events in Canada now.

In Brazil they have a steady stream of fighters coming up, you have nobody in Canada coming up. GSP probably comes back for a fight or two and that will be big but without another star or a flood of good fighters the Canadian market isnt gonna be a priority for UFC anymore.

Sat was a great night, UFC card was amazing, LM/Rocky fight was entertaining, JCC quit on his stool.

    Great fight weekend.

Few good fights on 186 this weekend, Floyd/Manny next weekend, most stacked combat sports card of the year 187 end of the month. Mix in Canelo/Kirkland, Hunt/Stipe, edgar/Faber for free in Manila, Condit/Alves free in Brazil. May is gonna be one of the best combat sports months of all time.

Ratings are only going to get worse with Chavez Jr. headlining, most boxing fans are completely off this guy since they see him as a talented but spoiled rotten brat who doesn’t respect the sport and refuses to take it seriously–The dude trains on his living room for fights, yes seriously… his trainer had to beg him to take the training to the gym lol

I heard that Chavez only trained with his trainer for 3 weeks, I hope he quits the game, sick of him. Oh and please find me a person with a job that doesn’t have cable tv in America!! So comparing NBC to fx1 is almost the same. Besides you need cable to get PPV, no dish anymore for the UFC hahahah what ass clowns, they can’t even make a deal!!!

Sal contradicts himself everytime he comments. He compares cable number for the ufc to network numbers for boxing, but denounces doing the reverse because he is a boxing troll who is being paid in food stamps. Sal is a complete fucking idiot.

@Tops the UFC has been fudging its gate numbers for years now, they try to make it look like their sell percentage are much higher. They even lie to fighters and sponsors about the gate, they even count comps as sold tickets. In canada they cant and they are fucking exposed for another lie, shit gate, shit ppv and shit show. Where are the ppv numbers for the last 2 shows????? Boxing releases numbers in a few days, why does it take a month for the UFC? Reason: they are a bunch of fraudulent sacks of dog shit, and morons like D just keep defending the lie. hahahahha more will keep being exposed. Canadian fans aren’t t as stupid and are more money conscious then American fans. Europe is even worse, hahaha and mexico is not sold out, you can still buy tickets. The UFC need to concentrate on what they got!! Not NY and not overseas. D cant understand the difference between pay TV and free TV. And doesn’t realize that basic cable is free tv. Do you think sponsors give a fuck about some jerk that cant even afford cable??? hahahha D needs to watch and learn, all the answers aren’t in google. D= the stupid google generation hahaha

Saldaqueef lying again. The UFC releases their gate numbers for every event the night of with the exception of some of the one’s abroad. The gate numbers aren’t lies you idiot, they can’t lie seeing how they have to report the numbers to the athletic commission, fuck face.

Meltzer already released the ppv numbers for the last two shows idiot. The UFC doesn’t release them.

Boxing releases the numbers in a few days???? No they don’t you stupid fucking idiot. They don’t release them at all. When they do talk about the numbers they don’t publish them and they are always flat out lies which are pointed out by Dan Rafael as lies. Then welfare to work paid boxing trolls like Sal just accept what they say as being evidence, mean while the reality is the opposite. This moron thinks he knows the business yet doesn’t know the difference between an LLC and a corporation. He thinks you pay federal income taxes per event. HAHAHA!!! What a moron.
