May-Pac PPV will cost $99

April 1, 2015 by Jason Cruz 29 Comments

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that May 2nd’s long-awaited PPV fight between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather, Jr. will have a price point of $99 HD and $89 SD.  It will be the highest priced PPV ever.

The previous high for a sport PPV was “The One” which featured Mayweather fighting Canelo Alvarez.  The event which drew a record $152 million in PPV also had the highest price point, $74.95 HD ($64.95 SD) for a PPV prior to next month’s event.

HBO and Showtime are handling the negotiations with pay-TV distributors and had sought an advantageous split on behalf of Mayweather and Pacquiao.  With a normal split of 50/50 for PPVs, HBO and Showtime were looking for a 70/30 split of the PPV revenue.  Of course, pay-TV distributors balked at the proposal.

The key distributors involved are iN Demand and DirecTV. The other distributors that the networks must reach agreements with are Dish Network and Vubiquity, the entity that handles negotiations for AT&T and others.

The WSJ report indicates that distributors will concede a split in the favor of the networks but not as much as the 70% proposal.

Estimates claim that the PPV could garner 3 million PPV buys which may almost double the previous PPV record.

Payout Perspective:

It’s unlikely that $100 will deter many wanting to see this fight.  Although the price is steep for a fight that many believe should have happened years ago, it is still an attraction that is unique and features the best known boxers in the sport.  It was no surprise that HBO and Showtime sought a bigger piece of the pie in these negotiations as both are trying to maximize the revenues as they have agreed to partner in this event.

No way on gods green earth this only does 3 million ppv buys (which would still be a strong number). I know people who would NEVER pay for a boxing ppv that are looking forward to this fight. It will do MINIMUM 3.5 million ppv’s but do not be surprised at all if it does 4 million. It is very capable. EVERYONE wants to see this fight. No one on the street gave a shit about Canelo. EVRYONE knows pac and Mayweather. EVERYONE

its a mistake to go that high. it will discourage casuals from getting it which are exactly the people a super fight of this magnitude would typically attract.

The split is now rumored to be agreed at around 60% in favor of the networks, which is insane, it’s easier to get Dana White to not make an ass of himself than to get PPV distributors agreeing less than 50% share.

How the hell do these guys make money ?

If the fight sells for $99 and gets 3M buys, you’re looking at about $300M. In additional, the gate is expected to be at $70-$80M. Both numbers shatter all records..

Yahoo is reporting that Mayweather could make close to $180M on this fight and Pacman would take in about $120M. That eats up the entire PPV revenues.. How do the PPV distributors get paid ? What about the venue ? Production ? marketing ?

Take into consideration that Floyd is his own promoter, depending on the deal, he and top rank/Pac will split all costs of promotion and production. Keep in mind HBO and Showtime will also share the cost. Both those numbers are high estimates of amounts each fighter/ promoter will gross. There is easily another 100 million or more income of various deals such as sponsors, tv rights ect. Plus Vegas paid out the ass for this event. So $180 million is not a walk away amount for Floyd.. Remember this is for one show, not 34 shows plus TUF like the fox deal of $100 million hahaha

HAHAHA! Always funny when Sal attempts to back up delusional figures. JF, here is the answer to your question- THEY AREN’T MAKING THAT MUCH! Those are absurd lies and bullshit figures to manipulate the public to pad that idiot’s ego.

Don’t get me wrong, they are making crazy money for this fight, but no where near those delusional figures. Mayweather will probably make something like 80m.

“At the end of the day this fight and the 2 after will go down in history, ”

This is the very definition of Nostradumbass. There is no way there will be 3 fights, and it is doubtful there will even be 2.

“set a new standard and be in the top 10 moat watched sporting events.”

It won’t even be close to the top 10 most watched sporting events you fucking idiot. They are ppvs. UFC on FOX 1 and 2 drew more viewers than this event will you schmuck. HAHAHAHA!!!

HAHAHAHA!!! The 3rd world market! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Sal is beyond retarded when it comes down to either sport. He just repeats what his fag boss Arum tells him to do.

More delusions about a 3rd fight, and most likely will be one fight only. Mayweather doesn’t like taking risks. He’s gonna win how he always does by boring the crowd to death and then fight an easy shit opponent afterwards, followed by immediate retirement. He wants his undefeated record. Stop being the fag that you are.

Hahahaha. Delusions. First off, that isn’t even true. Second, he is one boxer, where 99.9% of boxers are on welfare. How many boxers are in the top 1000? Maybe 4? And 1 of them is there because of charity and endorsements. Also, he promotes his fights which is where most of the revenue comes from, and he will be retired in the fall. Then what? Sal’s going to have to scramble to come up with a new angle. Maybe PBC will come through after it’s shit numbers. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
