GGG posts 862K viewers for Saturday afternoon fight on HBO

February 24, 2015 by Jason Cruz 32 Comments

Steve Kim of UCN Live reports the Nielsen information that HBO’s Saturday afternoon live showing of Gennady Golovkin defeating Martin Murray drew 862,000 viewers and peaked at 938,000.

GGG KO’d Murray in the 12th round after dominating most of the fight.  The fight was shown live on HBO and replayed later that night.  The event took place in Monaco.

ESPN’s Dan Rafael also added that it bested 2014’s Saturday afternoon cards of (Froch-Groves II 700K and Klitschko-Pulev 620K).  The night replay added an additional 571,000 viewers for a total of approximately 1.433M.

 GGG Fights on HBO

November 2013 vs. Curtis Stevens 1.41M viewers (fight only)

July 2104 vs. Daniel Geale 984,000 viewers (overall show drew 758,000)

October 2014 vs. Marco Antonio Rubio 1.3M viewers (fight only)

Payout Perspective:

Although the ratings are down from his last fight on HBO, we have to factor that it was a Saturday afternoon.  The numbers reflect the fact that GGG is a popular fighter that should receive a higher profile fight.  However, it appears that most fighters are unwilling to get into the ring with him or the usual promotional issues are a hurdle.  862,000 fans tuning in on a Saturday afternoon is a great number and reflects the fact that boxing is re-surging (or continue to surge depending on who you ask) in popularity.

1.4 million between both telecast and for ggg peaking at 940g for a afternoon fight is impressive as hell .. Nice humble dude killer in that boxing ring … Still didn’t understand the move to take him to Europe smh man was selling out in L.A selling great numbers in New York to take him out of that and put him in the afternoon type of deal is ridiculous to me oh well

Boxing should be on in the afternoon. More people will have access to it and see it if its consistantly on in the afternoon (5pmEST) The reason why more people didnt see this show its because it was a random afternoon show so they arent expecting it. Fights at 11pm make no sense. no other major sport airs at this time.

d- whose trolling. UFC on Fox is on basic cable and on at prime time. You have to have shos on consistantly in the afternoon to build the afternoon audience.

GGG is not the best boxer in the biz, you idiot D.

But his big viewership will come when he faces an opponent that can put up a fight.

GGG vs Julio Caesar Chavez Jr is being talked about.

I would say if they put that on HBO, ill go on record as saying that fight can hit 2m viewers on HBO.

Jesus, I’m guessing the prince of Monaco made it worth his while. But I agree, he needs to commit to building his fan base in North America. His English is coming along. Sort of.

Arthur Abraham vs Paul Smith did 4million viewers in Germany, a country with only 81 million total in population. Golovkin-Murray also did over 2.5 million viewers. The UFC could only dream of doing those type of numbers in Europe.

Actually D, Germany and the UK support the rest of the Euro nations, you have no idea what you are talking about. Germany has some of the richest banks in the world. German market is huge for Soccer and Boxing, funny how mma hasn’t caught on as well. Of all the Euro countries Germany and the UK are the closest to the US. Canada is more of a welfare state then Germany, once again you show your lack of any real world knowledge. Move out of your parents basement and try to see what is out there you loser!

The UK is completely separate from the EU, they have totally different currency you fucking idiot!! You know nothing about the economy of Germany. The country is on fucking welfare you idiot! It’s been like that for years!

Yeah, Germany is so huge on boxing, they don’t have PPV! HAHAHA!!! At least the UK has a ppv once every year or so. Germany doesn’t even have that. That’s why Klitschko was holding out on Haye forever because he wanted Haye’s ppv points because Haye made more money! HAHAHA!!!

The Canadian economy is a thousand times more stable than Germany’s. You don’t know anything about this world you fucking idiot. Get out of your foster parent’s basement you diaper wearing 50 year old, scab.

Boxing is still bigger then mma in Canada.
Also it doesn’t matter how a countries economy is doing, were talkin about whether or not a boxing or mma is more popular in certain countries.
Is Brazil the only country that mma is more popular than boxing?
And its not really mma but more so bjj thats popular down there.
Every other country that has some credibility in the fight world chooses boxing over mma.

Germany doesn’t have PPV and yet Klitschko makes more money than every UFC champion combined. Ppv isn’t as important outside of the US, where promoters can get big sponsorship money and put their fights on free tv. That’s why you rarely see German fighters coming to the US. http://www.forbes.com/profile/wladimir-klitschko/

Klitschko does not make more money than every ufc champion combined that is absurd. As a matter of fact, the only time he makes more than the top ufc fighters do is when he gets a charity purse from some Russian billionaire!! HAHAHA!!! Boxers are charity cases. HAHAHA!

“According to Dan Rafael, a Russian promoter Vladimir Hyunov has made a huge, huge $23 million purse bid for a fight between IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko and WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin for an August 31st fight in Moscow, Russia.”

Fight took place in Moscow in October of 2013.

Asked whether the purse was the biggest in Klitschko’s career, Boente laughed and said, “By far.” The total is also easily the biggest purse of Povetkin’s career.
