Mayweather-Pacquiao set for May 2nd

February 20, 2015 by Jason Cruz 122 Comments

The long-awaited fight between Floyd Mayweather, Jr. and Manny Pacquiao is taking place May 2nd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.  Mayweather posted a picture of a piece of paper which he states was the signed contract for the fight.

It is being reported that the purse split is 60-40 in favor of Mayweather.  One would assume that Pacquiao would probably make up the split in international television rights although that is not being reported.

Pacquiao confirmed the fight was on via Yahoo! Sports and Kevin Iole.  It is expected that Floyd is making $120 million (not counting the ancillary business which is sure to propel him higher) and Manny will make $80 million.

While the biggest gripe about this fight is that its happening past both of their primes, it is sure to set Nevada gate and attendance records as well as closed circuit and PPV buy rates.

For those wondering, the biggest gate occurred a couple years ago with Mayweather-Canelo at the MGM Grand.  The attendance was a little over 16,000 but a gate of over $20 million.

A Floyd-Manny PPV would certainly break or near the reported 2 million PPV buys of Mayweather-Canelo and Mayweather-Oscar.

Although no specifics were reported, one assumes that this is a Showtime PPV since Floyd still has two fights left on the deal.

Payout Perspective:

Its clear that this fight will receive a ton of media as fans have been waiting for these two to fight for ages.  Expect a PPV price that will be more than the $75 for the Canelo fight.  Perhaps $100?  In my opinion, it would not surprise me.  We will be treated to a great deal of shoulder programming including, what I anticipate, an extensive All Access 360 covering both of their camps.

Minutes after the fight was officially announced, MGM Grand has sold out its hotel.  Expect much of the strip to be sold out the first weekend in May.

We will keep you posted on the business end of this fight as May 2nd nears.

I’d pay $75 – $100 for this fight. 2 – 3 million PPV sounds right. As for UFC 184, I wouldn’t pay or watch it even if it was free. UFC 185 is a possible purchase. UFC 186 meh. UFC 187 definite purchase if card doesn’t collapse.

Rumor is the PPV is going to be $89.95 for SD and $99.95 for HD. If there is ANY fight that can get away with that price tag–and still shatter all records–is this one. This fight goes beyond boxing or combat sports, the media buzz that only the announcement is generating on traditional and new media has been insane, not just nationally but worldwide.

I am not sure what the contract says regarding who does the promotional countdown, 360 or 24/7? or both? But I can’t help but wonder how ‘360’ is going to treat/edit Floyd after he pretty much lied and threw them under the bus on the last one–heard they were pretty upset with him.

Also, is May 2nd too soon? was Bob Arum right and should they have moved it up to June to give them more time to promote it?

All I know is… I CAN’T FUCKING WAIT!! So happy this finally got made.

This fight will break 3.5 million ppv buys. Floyd vs Canelo did 2.5 and the average dude on the street didnt even know who Canelo was. EVERYONE knows Pac. A few years ago it would have done over 4 million. Everyone was talking about it a few years ago.

Jack- I am well aware that pricing effects buy rates but I’m telling you people wont give a shit about pricing with this fight if its under $100.00. This is the only fight I have ever heard of where people who dont even like Boxing want to see it. Dont be surprised if it does 4 million ppv buys. I’ll be conservative however and say 3.5. This is MASSIVE!

MMA Truth- Cmon man Boxing’s been around for 100 years despite treating fans like utter dog shit. Mayweather vs Pac does will do at least 3 million ppv buys despite its bs politics. Are you still gilible enough to believe the sport will just go away especially now that it will be put on network. Genady Golovkin is the next ppv star and there’s always a sleeper.

This could hit 3m though and will be the biggest fight ever and by next year- Floyd Mayweather will be retired/Pacquaio will be on his way out, and boxing won’t be able to do anymore major ppvs like they have with Mayweather. So enjoy it while you can. Haha.

D- If the fight does 3 million at 100.00 thats 300 million dollars. the distributor gets half however the live gate, sposnorships, international broadcasting rights and site fees will make it a 200 million dollar event. The boxers will spilt about 120 million among themselves. I know it hurts since most mma fighter get 100k and a bucket of chicken each fight. Also please provide me with the name of 3 UFC stars who will be able to draw over 1 million ppv’s per event in coming years. you should have no problem doing so since your sport is soo white hot.

The ppv companies get 50% plus in demand also gets 10%. So the promotion gets 40% of the ppv revenue. The live gate will probably do around 30m, the site fees are not very much in comparative to the other revenue streams and the int’l tv broadcasts bring in a fraction of what ppv does. That also doesn’t factor in other overhead, like what Haymon and Arum are getting paid, it doesn’t factor in promoting the fight which will cost tens of millions and comes directly from the promoters(Mayweather, Pac/Arum).

I know it hurts that you are retarded and most other people on this planet do not share your down syndrome. You may want to try another site, where people won’t call you out on your idiotic, delusional, bullshit. Everything you state is false. You are a total moronic boxing troll who hates the fact that mma is more popular now in the US than boxing is.

There will definitely be ufc’s that do over a million in the next few years, I can’t say the same for boxing because the only two guys who can sell a million buy ppv are retiring soon. Not to mention of course, that the UFC(unlike boxing) can sell consistently with multiple stars.

120m from ppv(at most), 30m gate, 10m sponsorship(that goes to showtime/hbo because they cover the production costs), the int’l tv is probably more than 10m, but the closed circuit is not 10m, there are site fees also- but they are probably no more than 5m. Since you are an idiot, you of course dismissed all the other overhead they have like paying out Arum/Haymon, promoting the card(10s of millions), taxes, undercard purses, insurance, etc. They are making nowhere near these delusional estimations.

I think this fight breaks all records and breaks all rules. For a fight of this magnitude, everything is negotiable. That means the usual splits to managers, Showtime, HBO, PPV providers, promoters, etc are likely to be unique. I have no idea what the final numbers will look like, but I have buddies overseas who are fans of MMA, and never follow boxing, who are talking about flying in to Vegas to watch this live. Certainly they will pay whatever the PPV costs. For me, this will be the first Mayweather PPV I buy since the debacle that was his fight with Victor Ortiz.

My one concern for this fight is that they are putting themselves under the gun if they want to have it May 2nd. I would have figured later in the May would give them more time to promote.

As for the idea that there will be a trilogy – I’m not so sure. The biggest PPVs in history were one-off fights – Tyson-Lewis, Oscar-Mayweather, Canelo-Mayweather. It doesn’t mean it’s not possible, just that it’s rare. We’ll see what happens. Not to mention, Mayweather is a boring fighter, so his rematches are never good.

I’m just excited this fight got made. I put it out of my mind after so many failed attempts but I’m clearing my schedule for Cinco de Mayweather.

D- PPV doesnt take 60% stop with your bullshit. Its 50%. I also forgot to mention millions are also made off of fight merchandise and site fees for this fight wil be about 20 million not some chump change you mentioned. Casinos would die for this type of business. The MGM is already sold out of hotel rooms. what the fuck the fight was just announced. mayweather and Pac will also fight in the fall (hopefully in a rematch) but if not they’ll still add another 1.5 million total on Boxing’s ppv total this year. Cotto will add at least another 500k. 5 million buys for Boxing this year. boxing wins the PPV war again this year.

I noticed you never mentioned 3 fighters that will be able to draw a ppv buy of over 1 million. LOL. Boxing will soon be on CBS & NBC!! Holy fuck batman. Freddie Roach also mentioned that he has a fighter called Franke Gomez who is almost on par with manny pac right now. There’s another Boxer called Felix Verderjo, GGG, Danny Garcia will hold his own. Fightbusiness you are a fucking idiot who doesn’t bother to do any research and just spews bullshit out like Sal. IN DEMAND charges 10 % shitface. That is added to the 50% split. So while dish network buys go 50-50, anything from Verizon/Comcast which is the overwhelming majority of the buys is a 60-40% split idiot.

HAHAHAHAHA!!! You literally make things up as you go. Merchandise for this fight might be a hundred k. This is at the MGM, not Cowboys stadium. Also, this fictitious 20m dollar site fee, is pure fabrication, they will not pay him anywhere near that. Give me one comparative example that is even over 5m from his past fights you fucking moron. His fights ALWAYS sell out the MGM Grand hotel rooms. Also, there is zero guarantees that there will be a rematch between these two. De La Hoya did a massive ppv with him and they never rematched. Not to mention 5m buys won’t cut it this year for winning the ppv battle, and even if they do, it will only be, because this fight inflated the numbers. Cotto’s last ppv with Martinez did 300k buys and was heavily promoted. He is not the draw he once was. Anyone he fights where he is the A, is only drawing 300k at most.

Boxing will soon be on CBS/NBC…. yeah and they have to pay for it like WSOF. HAHAHA! Boxing will NEVER be able to replace Floyd Mayweather, ever. He is the biggest draw in the history of the sport financially because he never lost and can sell a fight better than anyone. Guys like GGG, although probably more talented and exciting than Mayweather, can’t sell like him. Once those two retire, you are going to see a major drop off in interest. Those other guys you mentioned have yet to even sell 1 ppv buy.

What’s funny is although this is a very big fight, boxing is going to go into hibernation after Mayweather retires in the fall. Maybe Andre Ward will save the day with his zero ppv buys. Maybe Haymon will with his network tv deal that he has to pay for. Hahaha.

NBC gives a fuck. They don’t have a ton of confidence in him or they would pay him themselves and get their own advertisers. He can lose a shit load of money too. He hasn’t proven himself with the networks.

“I remember when Rogan told Lou Dibella on espn that after Delahoya & Hopkins leave there will be no more Boxing stars. they will all go to MMA. Fuckin Classic. Now its “after mayweather & Pac are gone Boxing….. lol”

Think about what you are doing, and why you are proving Rogan’s argument in general about the climate of boxing. You are on this website reading all of their articles, trolling all of the articles and attempting to spin everything to make boxing ‘s ratings, interest, etc. look better. This is a mma website, why are you so dedicated to coming on here(as well as many other idiots that troll for boxing here), and obsessing about what is going on in mma? You don’t see mma fans going to the boxing websites and trolling there. You see it all over the place though on the mma websites. Why? Because boxing fans hate the fact that they are getting devoured by mma. This fight coming up between May/Pac is not reflective of the direction of the sport, it is the opposite. When these two retire, which will happen probably within a year or two for Pac and within a year for Mayweather, the sport is going to take a gigantic turd down the toilet in terms of ppv. Why do you think Haymon is running for a network deal? He knows the ppv industry for boxing is going to drop significantly when Mayweather retires.

Do you think at all before you make statements? This is what Rogan said: “the famous people you have right now are the only famous people that are going to exist in the future for boxing. The Oscar De La Hoya’s, the Bernard Hopkins, the Jermaine Taylor’s, the guys who were already famous before the UFC came along(implying when they started to take over the market share). Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquaio were fighting and were stars in boxing well before that interview. So he was actually right still, I mean the only two guys who can sell a decent ppv right now in boxing were stars then.

Something also that makes you again look like an idiot is the fact that you are criticizing what Rogan said which hasn’t been proven false, and are dismissing how delusional and antiquated what Dibella was saying. He used the phrases: “Human cockfighting” “Pitbull fighting” to describe mma. Meanwhile Jermaine Taylor is attacking kids in public because his brain is mush from fighting and you have yet to see any pro mma fighter with dementia from mma, nor have you seen a mma fighter ever die in the cage on any high level promotion.

D- the reason why most trolls are on this site is because you engage them. i know in my case I simply drop a comment or two sometimes even flatering about the UFC and you flip the fuck out and write a whole paragraph in response so you are responsible for most of the hate. Rogan said after Delahoya there will be no more stars “the stars you have now are all you’ll have”. the guy on the street didnt know about mayweather and Pac during the time of this interview. Mayweather’s ppv numbers didnt clear 350k until he fought Oscar. So he shouldnt have blown up after the victory because regardless of his victory boxing was going out of business. Was Canelo around during the time of this interview? Yet Cotto Vs Canelo would have done 1 million ppv buys. I called MMA inferior not human cock fighting. Here are some numbers of the UFC “devouring” Boxing: The largest MMA live gate in Las Vegas was 6.9 million (Anderson vs Sonnen 2) Do you know how many Boxing events have done larger live gates than that since the year 2000. over 30! Again if MMA is swallowing Boxing I ask you to provide me with the names of 3 MMA stars that can do over 1 million on their own. You frekin cant. Jon Jones is supposedley THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME and cant clear 800k ppv’s and rarely over 500k. Frankie Gomez, Felix Verderjo, Errol Spence, GGG, Mikey Garcia are all up and coming stars. GGG is the only upcoming PPV star in the bunch. Did you see him whoop ass again today?

Kurt Bandenhausen has zero credibility. He does zero journalist research, he just takes the words of the promoters and assumes what they are telling him is true. You just sourced Richard Schaeffer, Leonard Ellerbe and Floyd Mayweather you stupid fucking idiot.

Also, if you bother to read that report that you showed, maybe you can explain how Mayweather is allegedly getting paid 120m for this fight, and he only received 41m guaranteed for that fight when Schaeffer was expecting to hit 2.5m ppvs? Based on your math, it is sensible to assume the biggest fight of all time so far will be eclipsed by this fight coming up by 2.6x in revenue. HAHAHA!!! Idiot. Where is the money coming from fuck face? I think it is coming from somewhere you’ve been vacationing since you’ve started trolling this site- Floyd Mayweather’s ass.

Also, the seven sponsors did not pay the promoter you stupid shit. Your source doesn’t say that, it says that Showtime along with the promoters signed those sponsors, it didn’t say they would receive any of the income.

“Other revenue streams include 15,000 closed circuit seats showing the fight in Las Vegas that sold out at $100 a pop. The promoters are looking to add another 10,000 seats. More than 500 movie theaters with 125,000 seats across the country are showing the fight and are expected to charge $25 to get in. Money from closed circuit and movie theaters flows towards the promoters in roughly a 70-30 split.”

15000×100= 1.5m, The other figures even at maximum capacity, which they probably didn’t hit, would be at most another 3.125m making the gross for the Canelo fight at 4.625m for the closed circuit figures. After the 70-30 split, gives them a little over 3m in net for the closed circuit figures from Canelo-Mayweather. That probably didn’t happen either, because if it did, they would have mentioned it as a sell out like they did with the other figure. So the biggest figure you have is 3m, so you were only 70% off, you stupid fucking idiot.

Fightbusiness, you are a retard and deserve the insults I throw at you.

Please don’t try to quote Rogan, I already did show his whole comment that you exaggerated. Mayweather was a star at the time. He was a bigger star than Jermaine Taylor was who Rogan also mentioned including with those other boxers. Canelo as an A fighter draws 300k buys at most. If he fights Cotto, he will not do 1m buys.

You bring up gate revenue? Haha. Gate is a fraction of what the ppv brings in. PPV is where the majority of the money is and the UFC has dominated boxing 7 out of the past 8 years. Not to mention, you are wrong about your figures. You don’t do any research ever. I mean literally every figure you present is exaggerated or flat out wrong. UFC 129 did a gate of over 12 million dollars.

Again, in terms of ppv, name me 1 fighter who will do over 1m buys in boxing after Mayweather/Pac retire? You can’t. There may be one, but there is nothing on the horizon. Don’t throw that Canelo shit out there, he wouldn’t have been doing a fraction of that if it weren’t for Mayweather. As an A fighter he can’t exceed 300k. If he had a bigger opponent, I’m sure he could do a lot better, but I don’t see anyone he would do 1m buys with other than Mayweather/Pac, not to mention, no one else can either. The biggest stars after those 3, can’t even sell a ppv. Cotto-Martinez did 300k buys. So much for a big fight that was. GGG, is a great fighter, no question, probably the best right now, but the best fighters don’t always sell ppvs well. He doesn’t have charisma. He will never hit the peak that Mayweather did. There is a possibility that he gets somewhat near where Manny did, but probably won’t even hit that height.

D- GGG doesnt need to get to Manny’s level. All he has to do is get one million ppv buys each event to make him a bona fide star and shut guys like you and Roid head Rogan up. He’s capable of doing that. and you better pray to God the dude doesnt learn to speak English because if he does he becomes a star on par with Manny. His knockout ratio is 90%. I also said LAS VEGAS gate you fuckin idiot. UFC 129 was in Toronto. Do you want me to bring Boxing stadium gates (Calzaghe, Froach). Mayweather was only known in Boxing circles before he fought Delahoya. He was not known by any mainstream sports fan. and again according to Rogan Delahoya was it, Boxing was going out of business within 3 years of that interview. Heres another prospects. Freddie Roach says Frankie Gomez is a dude who trains and would knock Amir Khan out cold right now.

D-oh yeah despite promises from the Fertitta brothers that PPV’s would be better in 2015 Standard & Poors stated in their report that they just dont see an increase in ppv numbers changing the UFC’s bleak financial situation that much. Wait till the sport becomes more gentried. the UFC’s white demo which built & holds up the business will plummet. You better pray minorities stay in boxing.

Haha. Uh, a million buys is Manny’s level. Pacquaio isn’t Mayweather. And there is no evidence to prove that GGG will get there. Talent alone doesn’t do it.

As for the gates again, you are at best cherry picking stats, and once again, who cares, gates are a fraction of what the ppv brings in. And the ppv marketshare has been dominated by the UFC because they can sell with multiple stars.

Mayweather was only known in boxing circles before he fought De La Hoya?? HAHAHAHAHA!!! He medaled at the olympics, he was already on ppv. Taylor wasn’t the draw Floyd was at the time idiot!

Again, you are exaggerating what Rogan said. I put up the actual quotes.

D- who gives a fuck if he medaled dummy. Andre ward medaled with a GOLD no mainstream fan knows him. Medals dont mean that much in order to be a star. Did Pac or Marquez medal? You need a stacked division to be a star. NO Mainstream fan knew mayweather until the Delahoya and even during the Delahoya fight people saw it simply because they saw some ghetto ass clown yelling for attention not because they had heard of him. Mayweather vs Bladomir did 325k ppv’s that was 10 months before the Delahoya fight. Is that a star? and no it wasnt one bad night he never had a big event before Delahoya. There is plenty of ratings GGG will get there its called ratings on tv.HBO is a premium network look at waht he does.

Medals are definitely relevant. Ward is a star in boxing, he just isn’t a ppv star because he guy can’t sell fights.

Your argument is senseless when it comes to cross over stars because Rogan didn’t mention anything about that. This is something once again, you were manufacturing in your idiotic head. Everyone who followed boxing would have considered Mayweather a star at the time. That is what Rogan was pointing out.

The fact that by far, the two biggest draws in the sport are in their mid to late thirties, tells you exactly what Rogan was saying.

D has officially shit the bed! bahahahah. Here is something to suck on, this fight will actually be bad for mma and the UFC as a whole. MMA has created curious boxing fans that will forget about mma because of this fight, no other fight news matters and it just makes the UFC look like a low rent promotion, which is pretty much what mma is, lets be real. This fight will only increase interest in boxing and will build other fighters. Mean time the girls at the ufc will be grasping for any attention and press they can get and know one will care! At the end of the day this fight will gross over 500 million, here is an inside scoop that a dildo like D doesn’t know about. Both fighters and heavy gamblers, what kind of money do you think they will bet on their own fight?? put it this way, both camps are going to cash on every way they can, even leaking made up stories from the camp to change odds.. Most of what you were rambling there was incoherent, but the 500m delusion is what a brain dead moron would claim. Of course you can’t back that number up with any evidence what so ever, you just assume people are retarded and will believe the shit you lie about is true. Even Pacquiaos big step into super stardom was his win over De La Hoya.

    Thats how you make stars.

CBS, Showtime and various television distributors will combine to deliver $80 million to $100 million in promotional value through commercials plugging the fight, an increase of about 40 percent over the most they had spent previously on a Golden Boy promotion, Schaefer said.

Sponsorship revenue totals more than $2 million, up from the previous high of $1.25 million and more than double the $800,000 generated by Mayweather-De La Hoya, and sponsors will shift $15 million to $20 million of their media spending to promote the PPV.

Corona distributor Crown Imports is backing the fight with its largest retail activation in sports, with point-of-purchase displays in 15,000 retail outlets across 32 states. The brand cut its own commercial spot promoting the fight, as did another sponsor, AT&T. Corona will devote about $6 million worth of on-air media, airing spots during sports programming on NBC, ESPN, Fox and the NFL Network. AT&T will devote $1.6 million.

Most UFC fighters aren’t t even allowed to stay in big casinos lol Big Big money in boxing across the board, shit money in MMA, and all of it is borrowed!! D no one stalked you.
I just happen to stumble on here and noticed that there was another idiotic mma superfan named “D” spouting nonsense.
After a couple posts i put it together that you were the same jackass on yahoo.
I mean for fucks sake i click on the Mayweather-pacquiao article and in the first comment i see your stupid ass still doing the same thing.
