Haymon buys time on Spike TV

January 23, 2015 by Jason Cruz 24 Comments

MMA Fighting reports that Spike TV has added Al Haymon’s boxing organization to its Friday night lineup as the network will rebrand Friday nights as a combat sports night.  The new deal which was announced at a press conference on Thursday is reported to be another time buy by Haymon’s group.

Spike TV has Bellator MMA and Glory kickboxing and now has secured a deal with Premier Boxing Champions, Al Haymon’s boxing organization.

The plan according to Spike TV president Kevin Kay is to rebrand Friday night’s sole for combat sports.  MMA, kickboxing and boxing will be packaged together on Fridays.

The first boxing card on Spike is set for March 13th.

As reported by ESPN.com, this will be a time buy rather than Spike TV paying a rights fee for Premier Boxing Champions.

Payout Perspective:

The potential for boxing on Spike TV goes back to January 2012 when there was speculation that Top Rank would air the sport on the network.  Haymon’s latest purchase of time follows his investment with NBC where he purchased time for boxing to be on the network.  These moves by Haymon and his investors could mean a big shift in the sport.  With much of boxing’s big names kept on premium cable or PPV, Haymon’s new spots on Spike, NBCSN and NBC could reintroduce the sport of boxing back to a broader audience.

As for Spike TV moves, it follows a similar strategy by AXS TV in which it brings together two similar sports with the same demos on the same night.  With the acquisition of New Japan Wrestling, AXS TV provides a lead-in to its MMA and/or Kickboxing cards.  For Spike TV, it can now mix and match Bellator MMA, Glory and boxing on the same night.  The move should complement each show and keep its target demo on the network.

Haymon can make more buying the time and reselling the space than if he tried to get a significant rights fee from Spike.

Actually buying time is a much better deal if you have a good product, you own 100% of the programing!!! Boxing is far from desperate and will do well on spike.

Sal, why when UFC or WSOF buys time is it pathetic but for boxing it is smart? Not saying it’s not smart, because it is, but there is a lot of double standards there

Block timing means the promoter owns the show itself on tv…its good if you know you will have corporate sponsors to buy space for commercials…take all risks but if its a hit you will reap all the rewards…the promoter will have control on the creative side of productions etc….chances are haymon has corp sponsors already

Keep in mind this is so much different than the ufc deal. The UFC does not have to hit high level millions in their ratings or they risk collapse, Haymon does. The buy time part does not include the massive overhead that will come with these events. They are already talking about overpaying the fighters plus all of the other promotional costs. They are banking on massive ratings and they will not get it with B level talent like Adrien Broner.

The sponsors are likely already on board. Absolutely no way Haymon is taking a loss on this one.

No need to even make the move if it was even a possibility to lose on.

I have never said anything about wso or whomever buying time, so piss up your dads leg. Yes it is greater risk, however you control the cost of production, Fox controls production on its deal with the UFC, So in essence Fox can spend spend spend out of that so called 100 million. A buy deal and you keep all the advertiser money, Fox keeps all or most the money on the UFC deal. Fox can say no Joe Rogan and hire some other clown and we pay him x amount, and that comes out of the 100 million too, Fox says we need to use this video production company and yea it costs more but we only use them and the UFc has no say. So yea they both have their good and bad. BUT if you have a good product and know how to do it right its a better deal . D is an amateur retard who has no idea about deals or production or how anything works other then his pocket pussy that he stole from his dirty uncle who molested him.

They are already on board for the first year maybe. That’s it. If they don’t produce massive numbers it will be one and done and that is assuming the sponsors are on board for the full year.

Sal, you literally just make shit up, that is of course, the statements you make that anyone can comprehend, you incoherent tard. You are also dead fucking wrong about the UFC’s production control(plus everything else you rambled about). They would have NEVER given up full production control to FOX. Everyone knows they didn’t which is why we don’t see someone like a Gus Johnson calling the fights on FOX and we do see Goldberg/Rogan or Anik/Florian fucking idiot. FOX does the prefight and postfight shows.

Anyone who isn’t a retarded boxing paid troll who is proven dead fucking wrong about everything he states, who doesn’t know anything about how ppv works, who has down syndrome when it comes to comprehending how a business operates, who doesn’t even fucking know what a corporation is, who’s ppv predictions are as accurate as the end of the world people, who thinks businesses pay federal income taxes per event, who isn’t aware of the fact that his diapers need to be changed, who still thinks he isn’t perceived as the most delusional troll on this site, would be aware of this.

Sal, this is amusing. The first UFC I was at was at UFC 31 in AC at the Taj Mahal. I saw BJ Penns very first fight against Joey Gilbert. I’ve been to every single UFC since then in South Jersey and Philly other than the last two with Miller and Maynard. I’ve been to the following ufcs and mid major fight promotions in the past-

    -UFC 31 at the Taj
-UFC 41 at the Boardwalk Hall
-UFC 50 at the Boardwalk Hall
-UFC 53 at the Boardwalk Hall
    -UFC 101 at Wachovia
    -UFC 133 at Wells Fargo

-Euphoria: USA vs. Russia at the Taj back in ’04
-Euphoria: USA vs World at the Taj back in ’05
-Euphoria: USA vs Japan at the Taj back in ’05
-Bellator 33 at Temple University’s Liacouras Center
    -Bellator 44 at Caesar’s

I’ve also been to a ton of lower level locally promoted fights in Philly/AC.

Sal not only doesn’t know anything about the event production business and mma or boxing specifically, he literally doesn’t know what a corporation is. Not to mention every time he states something he thinks he knows, he gets proven wrong, badly. Maybe if he wasn’t choking on that old crusty fuck Bob Arum’s balls as we speak, he wouldn’t be such a boxing paid troll.

Another possible buy time deal also for CBS shows the very little confidence the networks have for boxing.

Boxing promoters to the networks- “pay us for a deal”

Networks response- “we’re not taking a risk with this shit”

Boxing’s response- “Okay, here’s 20 million that we just duped a bunch of suckers on”

Network-“wow they are morons, but yeah, we’ll take it”.
