Weidman out, Hendricks-Lawler II for UFC 181

September 22, 2014 by Jason Cruz 18 Comments

The UFC announced this afternoon that Chris Weidman is out of his main event fight with Vitor Belfort at UFC 182 on December 6th.  In its place, the UFC has inserted Johny Hendricks-Robbie Lawler as the main event for the PPV.

Weidman has a hairline fracture. It will be casted 4 weeks, cleared in 6. He’ll be fighting Vitor in February now.

— Dana White (@danawhite) September 22, 2014

Hendricks-Lawler had been rumored to be scheduled for early 2015, possibly Super Bowl weekend.  Instead of putting Gilbert Melendez-Anthony Pettis at the top of the card, the UFC decided to add the welterweight title match to the card.

With Weidman’s injury, if all goes well, we could see Weidman-Belfort on the same card as Nick Diaz-Anderson Silva at UFC 183.

Payout Perspective:

The move to insert another title fight into the mix for UFC 182 reflects two things.  The first is that the UFC wants to end 2014 on a high note with its PPVs.  Certainly so far there’s been some real underwhelming PPVs and even a cancellation.  Secondly, while no one will admit to it, there has to be a concern that the Gil-Pettis title fight may fall victim to injury.  Thus, Hendricks-Lawler serves as insurance for the PPV.  The Weidman injury is a blow to the PPV but at least the Belfort TRT issue will not be a part of the pre-fight media.  Based on the slate of fall PPVs upcoming, the UFC definitely wanted a big card to end the year and adding the rematch to what was arguably the best fight (so far) of 2014 helps.

Unfortunate. That was a fight I was looking forward to. The Hendricks-Lawler fight will be good as well, but it’s not as much of a draw for me. I agree with Jason that adding a fight to the card is insurance against the Gil-Pettis fight falling through. They are looking to stack their final few PPVs, which is good as far as I’m concerned. There have been too many mediocre PPVs this year, and tough PPV environment aside, it has shown in the numbers.

A dead reality show and a dying PPV business, not to mention their 2 biggest stars riding into the sunset. I have my doubts the spider will even fight in February – the guys scared to throw kicks in practice. Tough year for the UFC but it’s time to regroup. A better schedule (less shows), a new reality show, and some new company policies/rules on training (at least for champs) would really help 2015.

Right, 2 things that the UFC has to do that I don’t like – combined!
Match cannot happen + instant rematch instead of letting the division move on.

Hope, Vitor can push a quick cycle in (kidding) in the meantime.

Sucks but Hendricks/Lawler is a great fight.

Worst part of mma is cant ever get excited for cards cause you cant count on them happening with all the fights.

Normally I’d say look at the Fox card in Dec, this card, Diaz/SIlva in Jan, DC/Jones in Jan, Weidman/Vitor in Feb. end a bad 2014 with a great card and start off 2015 with huge fights the first 2 months.

But Vitor PED stuff, Weidman injury, Silva coming back off injury, Diaz with pot and now DUI trouble, Jones and DC coming off injuries. So they could have three huge fights in Jan/Feb or all three could possibly blow up.

Just hope guys stay healthy, if they do it will be a huge 2015 for the UFC.
