MMA Payout has learned that the prelims for UFC 177 drew an average of just 436,000 viewers. It’s the lowest output on FS1 since it began showing prelims.
UFC PPV Prelims since August 2013 (FS1 unless specified)
UFC 164 809,000
UFC 165 722,000
UFC 166 628,000
UFC 167 998,000
UFC 168 1,554,000
UFC 169 933,000
UFC 170 936,000
UFC 171 305,000 (FS2)
UFC 172 750,000
UFC 173 697,000
UFC 174 784,000 (FX)
UFC 175 1,000,000
UFC 177 436,000
Payout Perspective:
Only the UFC 171 Prelims had a lower rating due to the fact it was on FS2. As we inferred in our Payout Perspective, the prelims were bound to have a low rating. Not only were there just 3 fights, the first fight ended in the first round and there was 45 or so minutes of filler before the next fight. Certainly, this may have been the time that fans tuned out. Of course, the first full weekend of college football contributed to the very low number as well.

319.5M did not watch the UFC 177 prelims.
Approximately nobody watched it.

It’s Funny, in the USA w/ combat sports the big money comes from PPV, yet the UFC is set-on in becoming a TV property with deals the like of the NFL, NBA, UEFA etc. It’s not gonna happen.
Then on the other hand over in México boxing gets its big money from TV contracts with Televisa and TVAzteca trying to outbid each other. This is the reason why all popular Mexican boxers fight in the USA (Great gate & PPV) all while the fights are shown for free in México due to the big money that flows from the Network contracts… Its a win win situation (PPV & Gate from the USA + Mexican TV Network money). Yet knowing all of this, the UFC actually wants to become a PPV attraction in México LOL Let me see if I get this straight:
México = Big money w/ TV networks (Little money on Gate, terrible PPV). The UFC is pulling good numbers on TV yet they want to use that as a stepping stone for PPV WTF!!?
USA = Big money from PPV, yet the UFC wants to be a TV property with a zillion shows per second destroying their PPV… ROFLCOPTER!!
D says
Logical should be renamed Delusional. What evidence do you have that the UFC is set on becoming strictly TV like the NFL, etc.?? There is none. What it seems like is they want everything: tv, ppv and subscription based tv for excess content.
You are completely idiotic. What you said is nothing but a lie. The UFC fights in Mexico are on free tv, not ppv. Mexicans are charged nothing and the UFC has had tv contracts with them for a number of years now. Do you even have a clue what you are talking about?
tops E says
Hahahahahahaha……ufc now is no news or more bad news….downgrade in credit rating coming very soon
FightBusiness says
The UFC could be very profitable (from their niche audience) if they put all their content on tv and just put on 3 ppv’s a year with their mega stars only. They would get huge tv ratings since they would have great stars on tv and each ppv would get over million. instead they just put conent up all over the place.
D says
Hmmmmm….a bunch of people who grew a business from a 4 million dollar investment into a multi billion dollar company or a schmuck who can’t even get numbers correct that frequents a site the focuses on releasing said numbers? I’ll take the first group. Fightbusiness, they make more money with their business model the way it is now.
To assume either sport would get over a million buys 3 times annually these days is absurd. No ppv has hit a million buys since Weidman-Silva in either sport. The last boxing ppv that hit a million was a year ago.
tops E says
4 million investment…and 500 million loan from rich casino owners hahahaha
tops E says
Loan from creditors i mean…..they spent more than 500 mil dollars to create the ufc bubble…hahahaha….very expensive hype

WE all know you can’t be that fucking stupid D!! but i guess free fight pass for a third world loser will make a guy like you say anything bahahahha
BrainSmasher says
Fight business. That doesn’t even make sense. What kind of ratings you think the UFC would get with stack cards with only 3 PPV’s? Even on fox they would only get 3-5 million maybe a hair more with a fighter or two. Bit they can’t run just on fox. Fs1 ratings would t be much higher than now. So they would be giving up more than a dozen 15 million PPV’s for much lower paying tv revenue. Then the 3 stacked PPVs would at best do 1.5 million. The UFC would lose tens of millions with a stupid idea like that.
What they are doing now is selling hundreds of thousands of buys on PPV and selling rights to the prelims and double dipping with each event. Something that would t be possible if there was no PPV. They would only get the tv money and be giving away the PPV money.
I can see the UFC cutting out a few PPV’s if the tv rights money gets where they want. But it will never be cut down to 3. Maybe 12.
Greg Nutsak says
These numbers suck and it’s clear that asshole Dana White has jumped the shark too. They are doubling up the number of events and barely keeping the same amount of viewers, if anything they are losing viewership because the events are weak. Keeping with that strategy is a horrible path.
The funniest part is that even their disaster numbers are still better than that shitshow GLORY, which will be dead within 18 months.
Saldathief says
The only way they could get a tv deal was to have lots of content, lots of shows. Stupid clowns didnt see the reality of it, they were dazzled by BIG TV lmao Some sales idiot sat around a board meeting and sold the ufc brass this idea and it looked and sounded good to the inexperienced dunces. Now they could brag to their golf buddies that they were on major tv, Amateur time!! They figured they would increase their ppv buys and major tv would be in essence complete advertising to get people to buy ppv’s I knew it was a stinker after the first Fox show, thin with no substance trying to act like the NFL. Now they are losing on all three fronts, tv and tuff in the toilet, ppv in the toilet and world expansion has been a financial disaster. So instead of having a nice ppv business now they have 3 areas that suck. Their overhead is enormous and when they started having problems they spent more and more. They think throwing money at a problem solves it, truth is they are listening to their own egos instead of common sense, they surround themselves with yes people, just look how asshole Dana acts when someone disagrees with him, immature fool! The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

Panic mode….international expansion, womens mma=ronda are just strategies to cover up theyre lack of stars….
they all of a sudden introduced wmma and hyped ronda so much that they did not bother to build the rest of wmma so now ronda opponents have little name recognition…rushed why? panic….they go to countries for the first time in 20 years just to create an illusion in the media of the excitment of the event.of course for 20 years people in that country have been watching the ufc since royce days…the real reason for international “Expansion” is the decline in popularity in the u.s……band aid solutions…..hahaha

Sal how many blow jobs did you give Arum this week you little queer? You know nothing- your stats are pure fabrication, everything you state is speculation that is biased from a boxing fanboy perspective. You are so delusional. Everyone here realizes it.

Brainwasher- No they wouldnt because if they could get 5 million viewers each event for the main event (which they could if they aired Hendrix, Rousey, Weidman etc ) they would receive an higher tv contract. That extra TV money would offset the lost ppv revenue. Which isnt that much now anyway because they have one all the damn time and it only makes 300k on average. Merchandising would also increase.
FightBusiness says
Brainsmasher (sorry I misspelled your name above)- Aside from geeting huge stars to fight on FOX, they would also have to limit their events to one a month on TV to hit the 5 million thresh hold. This builds up anticipation which no one has anymore.

The entire MMA business has peaked, it’s pretty clear and simple to see. I do love D’s comments though, I can see him huffing and puffing while typing trying to prove to anyone that would listen that he is right…if only anyone gave two shits. Sorry D, go suck on Deeezzzz Nutzzzzzz

Haha. Greg Nutsak aka tops aka sampson, aka 50 other aliases.
Right, the mma business has peaked that is why trolls like you dedicate your life to trolling a MMA WEBSITE!! HAHAHA!!! You suck on Dana’s nuts everytime you post here you dumb shit!
D says
Fightbusiness- you have no idea what you are talking about. Do you know how stupid it would be to put fighters like Weidman on free tv? Just look at his last fight- it generated on the low end around 15 million from the gate and ppv alone after the cable company took their cut. Not including int’l tv rights, sponsorship, mechandise, etc. They would be losing millions to put a fight like that on free tv. You don’t have a clue.

D’s family is from a small village in India where they have to defecate in buckets or in a river off a bridge. His whole entire family has never known the world of indoor plumbing and are flithly pigs! So we need to cut a guy like D a break! he needs this job posting UFC propaganda so he can stop wiping his ass with his hands, and then making food and eating it. the ufc has given D a decent wage of 10 cents a word and free fight pass, if he falls in line with their program of lies and deception. Who else would be so desperate for money and of course toilet paper but a third world turd like D bahahahhabahahha bahahahaha Must be a disgusting excistence having internet but no toilets ! D don’t put your hand near your mouth son bahahaha

Sal’s family is from a town called San Francisco where the gay population is through the roof. This is the only location where him and his fag family members can survive. He needs this welfare to work job from Bob Arum so he can pay for someone to wipe his ass because he is a geriatric with type II diabetes that is wheel chair bound and hasn’t moved from his computer in years.
This idiotic homo thinks organized labor is the same thing as ownership. I guess crusty Bob hasn’t told him the difference yet.
