Nick Diaz back with the UFC

July 24, 2014 by Jason Cruz 21 Comments

MMA Junkie reports that Nick Diaz has signed a three fight contract with the UFC.  Diaz indicated he is looking to return early 2015.

Dana White tweeted out the evidence of the signing.

He’s back @nickdiaz209 just signed a new bout agreement 2 fight! Details coming soon http://t.co/coguxLGhUI pic.twitter.com/BGlZriJjMW

— Dana White (@danawhite) July 24, 2014

Best quote from Diaz after signing: “I’ve been doing a whole lot of not getting punched around-type stuff,” Diaz told UFC.com.

The move brings a fighter back with tons of baggage but is someone that people are interested in seeing.

Payout Perspective:

Despite being on a two fight losing streak, Nick Diaz is a fighter the UFC needs and is a PPV quality fighter.  One need only look at UFC 158, his last fight against GSP, where his rant about “wolf tickets” and other musings helped the event garner 950K PPV buys and stellar ratings for its Prelims, weigh-ins and post-fight show.  Sure, GSP was his opponent, but it was Diaz playing the villain that had viewers wanting to see weigh-ins and see what would happen on the post-fight show.

Many are drumming up dream opponents for Diaz (namely Anderson Silva), but we will have to see who he is willing to face before getting too excited.  Regardless, the signing adds “PPV depth” to the roster.

The UFC is desperately in need of any fighter that can draw PPVs, so this is good for them.

Funny… The Randy Couture picture in the background… Dana probably uses it to play Darts on.

He is probably the most over rated fighter to ever fight in the UFC. He washed out his first go around in the UFC. Beat bums in SF and got back in the UFC only to lose every fight .except when given a guy who was also washed up who retired. So why doesn’t anyone care he is back? Btw what is the point of a 3 fight contract. His brother sized one and still won’t fight. Their word is worth nothing. Both brothers are a waste of time.

I like Nick. He’s exciting. I can’t remember a boring fight that he’s been in. And it’s better for the sport to have him in the cage than out of it. Warts and all.

This signing is a positive first step but as we know with Nick Diaz, the fight isn’t made until you lock the cage door behind him.

    BS,

I think Diaz is rated exactly right. No one is saying he’s the best fighter in the division, just one of the most entertaining in the cage and out of it and someone who will give anybody trouble. For the record I thought he beat Condit, and so did a lot of people at that fight – event he ones who booed Diaz’ entrance (I haven’t seen the PPV so I can’t vouch for TV). And GSP has beaten everyone, so I don’t think a loss to him makes a fighter overrated.

How did he beat Condit when he failed at everything he did? He was beat at his own game and frustrated because he was to slow and sloppy to land any punches. Condit picked him apart. I don’t like how Condit fought mainly because he didn’t need to show him that much respect. He could have went for the kill more often but was playing it to safe whe Diaz doesn’t have the single punch power to fear. But he owned Diaz that night. The fact Diaz taunted shows he was losing. That’s what people do when they are helpless. Ray Sefo did it at the end of his career when he got slow and couldn’t hit anyone. It would allow him to use his chin to stay in fights that were one sided. It would distract the judges and fans from the fact he hadn’t landed a punch.

Like Diaz or not he is great for the UFC and mma, Nick is his own worst enemy. I look forward to some exciting fights hopefully. Will Dana piss off and try to exploit Nick? Will Nick take his head out of his ass? Will he pass drug tests, he smokes weed, will he honor his contract and realize Dana is his boss.

Wrong. Diaz taunts everyone all the time. Winning or losing.

“he was to slow and sloppy to land any punches.”

He outlanded Condit to the head and body. Condit won that fight on leg kicks (and running). Saying that Nick didn’t land any punches is absurd and flies in the face of reality. I pulled the stats on FightMetric and Nick landed 105 sig strikes – yes I had to look it up because your post, stated with such absolute certainty, actually made me doubt myself for a split second and wonder if I was thinking of the right fight. I was. I’m not sure what fight you’re thinking about.

BS, your problem is that you’re completely biased and have a hard time seeing things rationally. I realize you hate Nick. Fine, I admit there’s a lot there to be bothered by. But that doesn’t mean that when he punches a guy int he face it somehow doesn’t count.

“He was beat at his own game”

Actually it was the fact that Condit refused to engage in a brawl that allowed him to get the decision. Nick’s game is going toe-to-toe (hence his popularity with the viewing public). Condit refused to play that game and stuck-and-moved his way to victory.

Nice try. But he was out landed over all and he did more damage. Only you look at a guy all busted up and out worked and claim he won because he talked shit after and during the fact. Condit was by far the more effective fighter and it wasn’t that close when you break it down by rounds. Btw when I said he could t land. I’m talking about meaningful strikes. He uses litter patter strikes any way. He struggled to eve do that let alone and damage shots. That’s why he was begging Condot to stand in front of him. Diaz needs to retire if that is what it take for him to win. Hell Tank Abbott would be champ if people had to stand and trade and play no defense.

Fights are not judged by your own personal fantasy scoring system. Condit out scored him in total strikes and significant strikes. He beat him in each 4 of 5 rounds. He did more visual damage. He had better defense and it shows by how low Diaz strike percentage was. He even had Mr Stand and Bang going for takedowns in the final round which shows his frustration and that he knew he was losing the fight.
