Ronda Rousey is featured in the current issue of The New Yorker. The piece entitled, “Mean Girl: Why the world’s best female fighter loves to be hated” doesn’t break new ground but gives the UFC bantamweight champ more mainstream exposure.
The piece written by Kalefa Sanneh gives non-MMA fans a long-form profile of Rousey. It pointedly talks about MMA web sites as “monomaniacal.” It even name checks Cage Potato. The article delves into the perceived “heel turn” by Rousey as the story begins around the time for her preparation for her February 2014 against Sara McMann.
Payout Perspective:
The New Yorker write-up is the latest in a line of noteworthy press for Rousey. Last week, Rousey won an ESPY for Best Female Athlete. In a piece in the Hollywood Reporter, she said she wanted to become “The Female Rock” (that is former WWE wrestler Dwayne Johnson). By the way, a lot of pro wrestling references in the New Yorker piece based upon Rousey’s fixation on it (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Pretty interesting how many mma fighters are in main stream movies, yet the only boxers who ever appear in film are long retired boxers.
Pretty interesting how the movie Rocky 1, not even counting the rest, has been an american foundation, and the movies about mma are relatively forgotten. Most boxers with any name recognition are too busy training for their next million dollar plus fight, and most dont have proper command of the English language to pass a screen test lol. MMA fighters are looking for anything they can to earn a buck. And seriously what real movies are they in anyhow? anyone who still reads the new Yorker doesn’t watch MMA or care about wmma. Its all a an attempt to legalize it in Ny state.

I could care less what any of those movies will be. Those movies now, at least the Expendables and Captain American did massive box office numbers. That is a reflection of the popularity of the movies and the fact that they would have mma fighters and not boxers in them goes to show the cross over appeal that mma has now as opposed to boxing.
