MMA Junkie reports that Gina Carano, if signed, will be next in line to take on Ronda Rousey in December. Dana White announced this during a media scrum on Friday.
The announcement means that Carano will be given a title shot even though she has not fought in five years. White defended his choice of opponents for Carano’s comeback as she has been training despite not actively fighting.

Payout Perspective:
The match makes sense from a business perspective but not from a matchmaker’s perspective. Carano has been gone from active fighting and it’s not clear what type of shape she will be in. Furthermore, she will be fighting arguably the best UFC fighter right now. Rousey is on a tear and it seems like Carano would be prudent to take a fight or two before she takes on Rousey. Then again, the UFC wants to jump on this fight now. If Carano would take another fight and lose, it would make it that much harder for the UFC to set up Carano-Rousey. If done, this fight will certainly grab the attention of a ton of non-MMA press.

This is a new low even for UFC standards. This is one Freakshow match but i guess the UFC is desperate for ‘anything’ at this point. Carano was never a well-rounded fighter to begin with, she was purely a striker with some D level grappling, she wasn’t a hard worker at the gym either and could barely make her contracted weight. And she has been out of competition for 5 years…… and is going to get an immediate title match? Bring in the circus and its President clown cause the freakshow is about to start.

Wow the UFC resorting to boxing style match making with the hype of the wwe. Unfortunately this one will bite them in the ass. Half of the fans have no idea who Gina is and the other half really dont care. What a joke, sounds like they are desperate for another planned. worked fight, so much for putting the best against the best. How could any serious fight fan take this seriously, it makes a circus out of wmma and the UFC as a hole. the male fighters must be really pissed off! Dana is delusional and completely out of his element , but who knows it may have its 15 minutes.

the ufc is not hot anyore, in the past 8 monthes they lost there two biggest draws.
i doubt none of there ppvs will draw close to a million buys this year.
carano was never good to begin with and hasnt fought in 5 years. this is the best

This is a bad idea for Carano. She needs to have a few fights to get back into it. She can’t expect to just jump back in to fighting and beat the champ in her first go. It’s ridiculous. I’m sure financially it makes sense in the short term since they are probably throwing a lot of money at her, but she has to realize that she can’t win this fight this way.
I understand that Rousey has gutted the division and it’s tough to find her opponents, but they have to groom Carano at least a little bit.
At least Rampage had one fight when he came over to the UFC before getting a crack at Chuck. And he was fighting in some other orgs on a semi-regular basis before hand. Even then the UFC pressured him into the title fight when Rampage wanted one more fight first.
I think Dana figures they’ll pay Carano a bunch of money, she’ll get pummeled and go back to retirement and they’ll be left with a champion who defeated a former champion and it just leaves the fight with Cyborg to worry about.
I just don’t like this fight. It’s unfortunate that they’re doing this.

The answer to all of the above is NO. Did any of the matchmaking above turn UFC into a joke, turn off mass numbers of fans, or hurt the sport’s legitimacy/business in ANY measurable way? NO.
It’s amazing to me that on a site about the business of MMA that so many just don’t get it, but I guess by now I shouldn’t be shocked. It seems par for the course that hardcore, smart mark mma fans forget history. I get it, someone took your cool, underground indie music scene, oops, I mean sport, made it mainstream/big time, and didn’t ask you, the “true” fans, permission to makes decisions about how to run the thing. I get that you hate Dana and his dudebro, jock culture, meathead style. Ronda vs Gina will put a huge, mainstream spotlight on the UFC/the sport, make Ronda a bigger star, put a bigger spotlight on Pettis vs Gilbert/other fighters on that card, and offer up a dream/fantasy matchup for casuals (former champ, current champ, one an Olympic medalist, two action movie stars, both hot chicks, a blond, a brunette).
You hate the Ronda vs Gina from a hardcore fans perspective? Fine, but stop the b.s. nonsense about it being desperate or hurting the sport or this being the end. MMA will ALWAYS be more spectacle/entertainment than sport and nothing will ever change that. Ever.
