UFC 158 Prelims: 1.58 million viewer average

March 20, 2013 by Jason Cruz 13 Comments

MMA Fighting reports that the UFC 158 Prelims which aired on FX scored an average of 1.58 million viewers for a 1.03 rating.  It made it the third highest rated prelims on the FX Network.

The event was widely watched as it was reported that there were a record number of people that tuned into the weigh-ins on Fuel TV Friday as the airing received an average of 215,000 viewers.  The post-fight coverage also received an average of 125,000 viewers.  Not bad after 5 hours of fights.

Via MMA Fighting:

The show also did strong numbers in the key demographics, with a 1.45 in males 18 to 49 and 1.38 in males 18 to 34. The post-fight coverage at 1 a.m., right after the pay-per-view ended, did 125,000 viewers on FUEL. It was the record for most viewers of a post-game show after a pay-per-view card.

MMA Fighting goes on to state that people logged on to watch Thursday’s press conference.  It was the highest viewed press conference second only to Silva-Sonnen II.

Payout Perspective:

The signs point up toward the success of this event.  The 215,000 viewers scored higher than some of the live events on Fuel.  Moreover, the weigh-ins occurred outside of prime time so folks made an effort to watch.  The takeaways from the high ratings have to be a mix of star power (GSP) plus controversy (Nick Diaz).  One would think that Diaz’s antics at the teleconference brought on more folks to watch the press conference, weigh-ins, etc.

For fellow boxing fans: The Bradley – Provodnikov fight on HBO World Championship Boxing last Saturday averaged 1.2 million viewers.

Why? Because he doesnt bury his head in the sand like the numbers done exist? He just offered them up for comparison. If he wasnt a fan he wouldnt know the numbers or even care. I think it shows he likes both sports and offers up the numbers to show how stupid the MMA haters that come on here are.

You’re mistaken. Been a boxing fan since 1987. Also been posting boxing info here for a long time.

because comparing an mma card with gsp, mma’s current biggest draw with bradley, a guy who is not even in the top 10 of boxings most popular teaches us nothing of value. on another story he compared the attendance between these cards. this is apples to oranges stuff. it would have as much value as comparing the ppv buy estimates for floyd mayweathers last ppv to rich franklins last ppv.

i see 3 top reasons for inserting these numbers in this story where they are of no value. 1. he does not know bradley is not a big draw, certainly not comparable to gsp in mma. a boxing fan would know this. 2. he wants to troll boxing fans, which a boxing fan would not do. 3. perhaps to cut off those mma haters you mentioned. but by putting boxing in a bad light? again, something a true boxing fan would not do.

Well HBO is in 28 million homes compared to 100 million for FX.

So 1.2 million homes peaking at 1.4 million ain’t too shabby for boxing especially when the product was 10000X better than the UFC.

Interesting. So, by that same logic 400,000 viewers on FUEL TV, which is in 36 milion homes, would be much more impressive than 850,000 viewers watching a program on SPIKE TV, which is in 100 million homes. Cool story, bro.

Actually 1.2 million viewers from 28 million homes is good.

250k viewers from 40 million homes is pretty shitty by comparison.

Cool story with HUGE feminine ramifications. Hahahahaha!!!

Jack, 1.2 million viewers watching Bradley vs. Provodnikov on HBO is not not a bad rating at all. Why are you inferring otherwise? It has relevance here because this is a site where many of us routinely discuss the ratings, financial performance, etc… of both MMA and boxing. If you look at other posts on this site over the couse of the past two years you’ll see myself and other posting boxing related stats. I posted on another topic that Sergio Martinez is close to selling out a 48,000 seat stadium in Argentina for his next fight. 1.2 million is a very positive sign for HBO that Bradley is catching on in popularity. They need he, Andre Ward, Golovkin and others to keep becoming television draws so that they can make big money off of them as PPV draws. The 1.2 million viewers is a positive. Sorry if it offended you for some reason.
