MMA Junkie reports the rating for episode 10 of TUF 16 drew a meager average of 643,000 viewers. Last Friday’s rating earned a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demo according to Television By Numbers.
Episode 10 was the second worst for the TUF series. This season’s episode 5 was the worst of all time with 624,000 viewers.

Payout Perspective:
With the news that Shane Carwin had to pull out of the end of the season fight, it seemed appropriate that the ratings would dip to near all-time lows. No word on the Countdown rating but based on episode 10’s poor rating, Friday night’s Countdown show may not have done well. The low number is a little surprising considering it was a UFC PPV weekend and a Countdown show was on the channel the same night.
I blame it on Bruce Lee’s daughter, Hurricane Sandy, el Nino, the NFL, NBA, NCAA, and the supporting cast of the Jersey Shore…

One thing I noticed was that there was literally no interaction between the coaches during the season… at all. I literally can’t recall a moment where they spoke one word to each other. I’m really not sure if even Jones vs Sonnen can save a season of TUF at this point. And let’s be honest, does it matter anymore? At this point, the show doesn’t accomplish anything for the UFC other than meeting contractual obligations to FOX, and if the ratings keep tanking, why would FOX want to keep it around? The UFC product wouldn’t suffer at all, since the show no longer brings in new fans, certainly no longer fosters legitimate prospects, and the lauded “coaches’ fights” are cursed (seriously: Rampage “retired” after season 10, Serra, Lesnar, Ortiz, Cruz, and now Carwin have been injured). If TUF died, I can’t imagine it hurting the UFC in the slightest given current viewership and the kind of talent the show attracts; those winners’ contracts are LOUSY, causing legitimate talent to avoid the show like the plague. It’s run it’s course, plain and simple, and I honestly don’t care if it keeps going or ends. TUF just doesn’t matter anymore, and in my opinion the folks at Zuffa should feel a bit lucky to have gotten this much mileage out of the concept.
