MMA Junkie reports the success of the second Invicta FC event which was streamed live on its web site this past Saturday. Although Invicta FC president, Shannon Knapp, did not reveal the actual viewers, she stated it was more than 300,000.
Invicta FC’s first online streaming event received 230,000 viewers. The flood of viewers is a positive sign for women’s MMA. The article indicates that 100,000 viewers were waiting in the queue prior to the start of the fights.
Payout Perspective:
Does this mean that women’s MMA is growing in popularity? Certainly the number of viewers gravitating to the Invicta web site is promising. Of course, the price of the event (free) helped with the number of viewers. Also, the lack of any MMA competition on Saturday helped. It did run opposite Olympics coverage as well. One of the positive signs for the company is how long viewers stayed on the site. This means that viewers would stay and watch instead of just turning it off after a couple minutes.
The next steps for Invicta FC include finding a way to monetize its product. The article talks of a television deal which would help with the business but relinquish some of the control. Another option could be an Internet PPV. But there are technology issues that the company must ensure lest there be a server crash causing bad publicity. At this point, the free service has been steady but the Junkie article points to some technology issues for Invicta in putting on the streaming.
The good news is that women’s MMA and Invicta FC are doing well after and things seem to be point up for the company.
The Olympics are not as attractive as they used to be what with the tape delays and commercials during the opening ceremony. Womens mma is in it’s infancy. I’d say it’s fifteen years behind mens mma.
Hard to say how far “behind” men’s MMA women’s MMA is. It’s probably not 15 years, since far too much changes in a short period of time in this day and age, especially in the MMA space. 15 years ago MMA was barely on PPV and was politically blacklisted. Now it’s on network TV. I think if a few more stars like Ronda Rousey were established, women’s MMA will get the necessary exposure to push them into that next level of popularity. It’s impossible to put any sort of specific time frame on their potential growth since it’s a crap shoot and involves a bit of luck and good timing. Overall, they just need more stars to emerge.

Womens MMA technically is light years behind the mens. 90% of the fights i wouldnt even compare to UFC 1. More like kids on a play ground. They are not even dominant in their main style and they are mostly clueless how to blend the styles and clueless about so many aspects. This is why you see them flipping around so much. Even Ronda in what little stand up she has shown has looked horrible. Atleast 75% of the women shouldnt even be fighting.
Its very hard for me to watch women MMA. I watch all fights and i have bet i have seen more than 10,000 MMA fights. But it is hard to see the men do things technically and see women use by technique, miss mistakes, and make poor decisions. If you dont spot these things the fight is exciting. If you can spot these things its hard to respect the female version of the sport. Ronda Rousey is a step in the right direction. But even she is only a 1995 version of Dan Severn to this point.
The level of technique in women’s MMA will increase. We’re already starting to see former Olympians make the jump, and if the profile of women’s MMA continues to grow we’ll see more and more high caliber female athletes migrate to the sport. As the money and exposure continue to increase, so will the motivation to train harder and learn more, and so will the number of women drawn to the sport. Hopefully female MMA fighters will be able to train almost exclusively with other women in the near future; it seems like a lot of them have to rely on male training partners in the current landscape. I agree it’s still raw, but that’s because there’s been a limited pool of competitors toiling in the shadows. It can only get better and better.
