As we all are probably watching the prelims in getting ready for UFC 148, the Wrestling Observer and ESPN report that tonight’s event will set a record gate for the state of Nevada. The gate is estimated at $6.5 million which far exceeds the old record of $5.3 million.
The old record was set in the same venue in 2006 and was headlined by Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz. Ironically, Ortiz is on this card in his last UFC fight.
ESPN reports that UFC 148 is the first MMA event to register among the state’s top 35 boxing gates.
Payout Perspective:
The gate is a good indicator that the buzz for Silva-Sonnen has worked. There will be closed-circuit viewings of the fight in Vegas to deal with overflow. It’s somewhat surprising that there’s been so many big fights since 2006 but none have eclipsed Liddell-Ortiz.
