Last week the Sports Business Journal reported that the television contracts between Direct TV and Fox have ended. The result could lead to a blackout of 26 Fox cable channels with the nation’s second biggest distributor.
While Fox channels remain up and running with Direct TV, the stall in new contract talks is something to keep apprised of as the UFC-Fox partnership begins. One might remember that Fox channels went dark during the MLB Playoffs on Dish Network and Cablevision last year while the parties tried to come to an agreement on a new contract.
The crux of the impasse between Direct TV and Fox is retransmission consent revenue. Its unknown what fee Fox is requesting from Direct TV although the report states Fox has been negotiating deals of $1 per subscriber per month for its broadcast network.
Payout Perspective:
The Direct TV-Fox negotiations are important for the UFC. Direct TV has 19 million subscribers and as the second biggest distributor in the US, a blackout of Fox channels could hurt UFC television programming with its new Fox partners. Certainly, the UFC would hate to see a blackout of Fox channels. One could only imagine the advantage Spike TV (with rights to the UFC library) would have with Direct TV subscribers if a Fox blackout occurred. We will continue to monitor the situation on the state of negotiations.
While this is bad news for UFC programming on FX and Fuel TV, “Big Fox” is broadcast over the air, so why would it matter for the network shows? I get Fox, ABC, NBC, and CBS in HD with a digital antenna for free. I was surprised that they broadcast in HD over the air, but it really works.
My 2 favorite shows are on CBS and I watch them every week. If i cant get them I will have to change carriers
Why would you want to do away with the independent stations, when the fire took place where we live, if it had not been for the independent station we would not have known what was going on. keep the independent station.

I am very upset because I can’t get one of the few stations I like to watch. You already took another station off without even letting anyone know 308. I am juist about ready to discontiune my service with you. When I first took Direct tv. there was suppost to be a promotion going on. Well my sister got it the very same time I did and she got the discount but I didn’t. I called about it and they said it was because of where I lived. I just live about three miles from my sister so it didn’t make any since to me. They should have told me when I signed up for it but they didn’t, they just kept giving me the runaround. I can get cable a lot cheeper but because my husband likes to watch one surten program is the only reason i still have Direct. But if I don’t get wgn back then I am going to get rid of it.
I am very upset with what I see as unfair practices by Direct TV. They already charge us for local channels and don’t want to pay for them themselfs. You can get all of the main channels in HD with an antena and other than the nominal cost to buy it, you would have free TV, only downfall is you would’t get all your other channels,that is where they have us over a barrel or do they ? You can always change carriers to DISH or go with Comast or just go with the free version of TV as for me I will not put up with this crap for very much longer befor making my change. If we lose our local New Orleans station for Saints football then Direct TV will lose me as a customer.
