CFL team sponsors Hominick for UFC 129

April 20, 2011 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

Canadian Football League team the Hamilton Tigercats announced that it has entered into a partnership with UFC featherweight Mark Hominick. The Ontario native will wear the Tigercats logo in his title shot with Jose Aldo at UFC 129 next Saturday.

Via the Hamilton Tigercats web site (Ticats.ca):

As part of the partnership, Hominick will also be featured at ‘MMA Night’ at Ivor Wynne Stadium when the Ticats host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 16.  At UFC 129, Hominick will wear a Ticats hat as he enters the octagon and will bear the team’s logo on his shorts during the fight as well as prominent visuals for the CFL’s best website, Ticats.ca.

“The popularity of MMA in Southern Ontario and in particular the Hamilton area is no secret.  We look forward to working with Mark to promote an exciting game on July 16th featuring great MMA fighters and thousands of MMA enthusiasts.  As an exciting, tough, local Canadian athlete, Mark embodies many of our organization’s characteristics.  We are glad to be in Mark’s corner as he contends for the featherweight title and we know our fans in the TigerTown region will be behind him,” said President Scott Mitchell.

Payout Perspective:

It is rare that a pro sports team has sponsored an MMA fighter. Notably, Urijah Faber and Diego Sanchez were sponsored by the Sacramento Kings but with the probability that the Kings move to Orange County that sponsorship deal may be up in the air. The partnership is good visibility for the CFL team as UFC 129 will have remarkable attendance and as one of the main events of the evening, many eyes will be on Hominick.  For Hominick, it’s a great opportunity to capitalize financially from his title shot. If he can pull off the upset, it could mean future mainstream opportunities.

In addition to the partnership, the Tiger-Cats are sponsoring a contest for tickets to UFC 129 as a means of brand activation. Aside from the tickets, the prize includes tickets to a Tiger-Cats game and autographed fighting gloves from Hominick.

Interesting - in the early 2000s, HBO had to defend "de facto" promoter allegations in front of Congress. If DAZN uses licensed promoters to organize the fights, it's hard to call them a "promoter." SRL signed deals with ABC and HBO without having a promoter, so it's been done.
