Spike TV to Telecast 10 Live “UFC Prelim” Shows in 2010

December 16, 2009 by Staff 4 Comments

After three well-rated telecasts in 2009, Spike TV has announced it will telecast 10 live “UFC Prelim” to precede some of the UFC’S biggest pay-per-view fight cards.  The first two scheduled events will be on  Saturday, January 2 at 9:00pm and  Saturday, February 6 at 9:00pm.  The remaining eight shows will be announced at a later date.

Drawing an impressive average of 1.4 million viewers in 2009, the “UFC Prelims” on Spike TV feature between two and four live undercard bouts prior to the UFC pay-per-view telecast.  Among those featured on previous “UFC Prelims” include former “The Ultimate Fighter” champions Efrain Escudero (Season 8), Kendall Grove (Season 3), and Ryan Bader (Season 8).

Nice, more MMA. I guess they discovered that the business model of streaming the cards on their website for a price just wasn’t reaping financial benefits.

What I do not understand is what is the benefit of showing the prelims at 9:00p.m. in the Pacific Timezone when the PPV starts at 7:00pm? They had them on at 9:00 Eastern and 6:00 Pacific before, why the change? Seems counterproductive given that the main point of showing the prelims on Spike is to try and entice people to buy the PPV.
