Sports Video Game Marketing Parallels

August 7, 2009 by Kelsey Philpott Leave a Comment

Sports Illustrated and EA Sports have combined to create a very intriguing value proposition for consumers: buy one-year subscription to SI magazine and receive this year’s Madden 10 video game (on any console) and an NFL history documentary for FREE with any paid order.

No, I am not an employee of either SI or EA Sports; nor do I have stock in Time-Warner or Electronic Arts. I simply like to shed light on interesting concepts that could be used in the MMA world.

The UFC just released its magazine to coincide with the UFC 100 weekend celebration. I’m not convinced as to how much traction the magazine will get, but it may be worth their while to establish a promotion similar to that of SI and EA Sports.

Even if, by ordering the UFC magazine, consumers get a $10-20 off coupon for UFC Undisputed game at select retailers – it could help. Throw in an all-time greatest fights DVD for good measure and further increase the exposure of the brand, while making consumers aware of the multiple offerings the UFC actually has. The sneaky “automatic renewal” clause can stay or go, but also serves a definite purpose.

Something random, something to ponder.

“It wasn’t a problem until she started asking questions in the middle of the ——ing game.”

Irsay-Gordon has agreed to stay in the press box.
