Controversy arises over Gatorade sponsorship

September 20, 2013

Yesterday, MMA Payout reported that Jon Jones had secured a sponsorship with Gatorade.  Today, the actual terms of the sponsorship became muddy as ESPN’s Darren Rovell indicated that no deal was made and then later clarified that its actually is a “one-off” deal.

Rovell initially tweeted:

He then clarified that the company would be sending product to Jones and allow him to wear the logo but no compensation.

Rovell later tweeted that he is receiving “compensation” although its not clear whether that compensation is the product or actual money.

Payout Perspective:

An interesting turn of events. Rovell is not the biggest fan of the UFC, and he usually is the proverbial wet blanket when it comes to good news. Today at the weigh-ins Jones tossed Gatorade bottles to the crowd as a symbolic gesture perhaps.  Let’s hope that it was not part of the product he was given by the company.  But, while the sponsorship might have been overblown in its announcement, it’s an opportunity for Jones and another hope that blue chip sponsors invest in the Octagon.

Wow can Grovell make a fool of himself any more? Reported false info and had to correct himself a half dozen times while at the same time showing he is bias and can’t be trusted.

Who cares what the sponsorship is? Jones is hardly the litmus test for MMA fighter. This fool wants to compare Jones to FMJ or something. But how many boxer have huge sponsor deals? Not many.

At this point Grovell can’t be trusted. How can you make claims like that and be wrong? He either knew the details or he didnt. He only made it clear that he did t know the details, his source didn’t know the details, or Gatorade is giving him murky details because they don’t want to tell him anything. So he makes assumption and his source has to keep telling him he is wrong. Lmao what a joke!

I also find if humorous that he says a 1 time deal in the UFC counts. Is t it boxing that is out looking for sponsors of every big match? Sponsors are done on a per fight basis as we seen with this last joke of a boxing match. Apparently it counts in the combat sports world. I guess Grovell forgets Jones has a deal with Nike before acting like he is a second class athlete who can’t get sponsors.

    Fmj i mean…

Companies probably heard that Ufc fighters get paid peanuts so they followed suit hahahaha….why would companies pay fighters big money when they’re own promotion won’t pay them much……….with the Munoz, volkman and Kennedy exposé degraded the marketing value of its fighters…….

LOL it is your own boxing “journalist” who is obsessed with MMA. Why is he talked about MMA when he doesn’t like it? Because MMA is a threat to his job. So he can belittle MMA all he wants. But he knows he is only talking about it because it is a threat to boxing. That’s why the HBO announcers made a fool of themselves trying to put down MMA. They didn’t mention it for 15 years then they cant stop talking about it. Hmmm, I wonder why?

Fact is “Grovell” is taking his jab at MMA after the biggest Boxing event ever. Because he knows the other 364 days in the year he don’t have anything to brag about.

Can’t beleive the UFC or Jon Jones would go so low as to announce that they are sponsored by a big company…without the usual sponsorship setup that is……
just so to say that they’re “‘MAINSTREAM” status…nba has Gatorade Jon jones is sponsored by Gatorade lol…..they’re using the company to make jones look marketable to sell his fight..because they cannot hype what they are paying him for the fight because it’s a small amount hahahaha….
