DAZN and Golden Boy Promotions announced a new media deal on Thursday. The new agreement will have Golden Boy on the online streamer continue to work together since their initial start in 2018.
The deal is announced as “multi-year, multi-fight partnership” although no monetary number was provided.
The press release reads:
The partnership will include championship fight nights alongside a new prospect development series – Golden Boy Fight Night on DAZN – a monthly boxing series hosted by boxing broadcaster Beto Duran and boxing Hall of Famer Bernard Hopkins. Additional blockbuster events to follow in 2022 will include the return of undefeated superstars Jaime Munguia, Ryan Garcia, and Vergil Ortiz in June, July, and August, respectively.
One notable name in the release is Ortiz who sued Golden Boy this past January. If we follow the release, we infer that Ortiz will fight in August. Ortiz claimed that Golden Boy’s media deal with DAZN ended and as a result Golden Boy had breached its contract. The case was recently moved to arbitration as Golden Boy asserted its right in the contract to do so.
As to the question whether the deal makes the Ortiz lawsuit moot or settles the case. Well, not exactly. The case is still set for arbitration which should occur sometime in the next couple months. While DAZN and Golden Boy maintained a working relationship the key was whether they had an actual long-term (not one off) contract for fights. Golden Boy’s lawsuit against Ortiz’s agent may be of interest considering Rick Mirigan has deleted his twitter account. Perhaps coincidence or a way to erase evidence. We will see.
