Another big weekend of combat sports

July 15, 2025 by Jason Cruz Leave a Comment

This weekend we will see another spate of combat sporting events which include a UFC PPV and the return of Manny Pacquiao.

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY – MAY 31: (L-R) Opponents Islam Makhachev of Russia and Dustin Poirier face off during the UFC 302 ceremonial weigh-in at Prudential Center on May 31, 2024 in Newark, New Jersey. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

The combat sports start on Saturday morning with the undisputed heavyweight champ defends his FIVE (WBA, WBC, WBO, IBO and The Ring) titles against Daniel Dubois. The fight takes place in Wembley Stadium and Dubois, a UK native, will have a hometown advantage over the Ukranian. With that being said, Usyk holds a KO win over Dubois in a fight that took place in Poland in 2023. The event will cost you $59.99 on DAZN PPV.

Maybe more curious than anything, Manny Pacquiao returns after almost 4 years away from competitive boxing to face Mario Barrios for his WBC welterweight title. It will cost you $79.95 to watch this and at least two other fights on this card. Its hard to know what we will get with Pacquiao as he comes out of retirement like almost every other prizefighter before him. I am not sure what truly happens if he actually comes out with a victory here but one can assume diminished skills and slower footwork as we all have aged since we saw him in his prime.

The Professional Fighters League returns with a big card from Cape Town, South Africa. The event will feature the return of its best and most marketable fighter (IMO) Dakota Ditcheva as she faces Sumiko Inaba. It will be Ditcheva’s first fight since winning the $1M prize in last year’s PFL tournament. In addition, Johnny Eblen takes on Costello van Steenis in a battle of middleweights. The fight takes place in CapeTown, South Africa as part of the PFL’s deal with Francis Ngannou to build out the MMA scene on the continent.

The biggest event of the weekend is another UFC PPV. This one has special meaning since its the last one for fan favorite Dustin Poirier as he takes on another fan favorite Max Holloway. The UFC has gone all out for this event as it centered the card around Poirier in his native Louisiana. While both Poirier and Holloway may be on the other end of their career, both fighters do not want to disappoint fans.
